Exploring Everyday Creativity & Social Justice through Technology
The Critical Creative Computing Lab (CCC Lab) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) consists of researchers interested in designing and building emerging technologies for situated contexts that support meaning-making experiences and creativity in everyday lives. We focus on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), family and children, and design with underrepresented groups. Specific research topics include designing IoT and sleep technology for families, children's VR use, and holding storytelling workshops with Southeast Asian immigrant mothers.
Our Research Areas: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Family Interaction Design, Child-Computer Interaction, Social Justice Design, Ubiquitous Computing, Human-Centered AI.
Our paper, "Navigating Hierarchy and Silence: Interaction Modes of Extrafamilial Intergenerational Co-Design in a Non-Western Context," was accepted to DIS 2026!
Can't wait to share our work in Singapore! ✨
Our paper, "Navigating Marginalization: Toward Justice-Oriented Socio-technical Design for Parent-Child Learning among Southeast Asian Immigrant Mothers in Taiwan," was accepted to CHI 2026!

We’re excited to receive two new research grants supporting our work on AI narrative systems for immigrant women and developing AI tools for parent-child communication!
In 2025, we collaborated with the National Taiwan Museum and the Hsinchu City New Immigrant Family Service Center for a series of workshops exploring the experiences of immigrant women in Taiwan.
Together, we co-designed chatbots that provide a platform for self-expression on their own terms. This video captures our hands-on process, highlighting how participants created zines of their life stories, engaged in co-design activities, and reflected on the event.
The research group was founded by Prof. Ying-Yu Chen. Our research approaches are deeply collaborative, where we value the contributions of every member and prioritize mutual support and respect. Together, we strive to create a supportive, growth-focused, and inclusive community that enhances the experience of every lab member. Our lab engages in both local and international collaborations with renowned institutions, such as the National Taiwan Museum, UC Davis, and NUS. The lab functions as a design and development environment, a place to discuss and co-create, and a collaborative maker space.
We are seeking talented individuals from diverse interdisciplinary backgrounds to join our dynamic team. We welcome students and researchers at all levels who share our interests. Our lab is committed to fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity. Join us to explore groundbreaking ideas and contribute to a vibrant research community dedicated to an innovative and inclusive future of technology.
