i was on the internet looking at celebrity photos when my computer "locked". I was told that I needed to call a support number via a voice that came over my computer. Basically it was a sales pitch from ultraviewer. I shut my computer down multiple times to get rid of this voice to no avail. After speaking to 'Samuel" I was able to end our connection and uninstall this ultraviewer app. He said my computer was hacked which I do not believe,
An adversary may use legitimate desktop support and remote access software, such as Team Viewer, Go2Assist, LogMein, AmmyyAdmin, etc, to establish an interactive command and control channel to target systems within networks. These services are commonly used as legitimate technical support software, and may be allowed by application control within a target environment. Remote access tools like VNC, Ammyy, and Teamviewer are used frequently when compared with other legitimate software commonly used by adversaries. (Citation: Symantec Living off the Land) . I looked at their website. Its supposedly a Vietnam based company and seems to be about a year old. It claims to be free for both consumer and commercial use. It looks good on the surface but from the screenshots it appears to be literally a layout ripoff of Teamviewer. I suspect legally there is infringement there. Before I download and attempt to use it I was curious if anyone else has had experience with it. I cannot find much info on the internet about it anywhere. One would think a good totally free Teamviewer alternative would have created some sort of buzz by now and had some reviews. Concerned that it could be a security threat once installed. Take a look at the site, even the site is very much a ripoff of Teamviewers site.
www.ultraviewer.net. The site itself seems safe.
Some further digging and I found that they are the producers of another product. Its a bulk emailer that appears to have been around for 4 years. While I am sure it is abused by spammers the product itself appears to be legit.
I just installed ultraviewer on some test machines. It does not appear to have an unattended access feature so I suspect once the application is closed they would be unable to somehow exploit it using the server generated ID number. I ran a Malwarebytes scan just to see if it would recognize any exploits after the installation and it was clean so thats good too. Once I activated a remote session with them I found it to work fine but its pretty basic compared to Teamviewer. No ability to do remote reboots and such. So not an great alternative to Teamviewer for doing major remote tech support but good for someone who just needs basic remote functionality. Does have a text chat feature though for whatever thats worth.
