Boots

Backcountry treks will require at least a medium weight, high ankle, waterproof boot. The harder the sole is, the longer the boot will last.

Water Bottles

At least two 1 quart water bottles.

Staying hydrated is critical to a successful and enjoyable experience. In some locations, access to fresh water may be limited. Carrying two water bottles allows us to travel further without having to look for water sources.

Stronger, more experienced hikers may consider carrying three bottles.

It is advised to have two distinct water bottles--one to use solely for water, and one to use for drink mixes. In some areas, water bottles that have contained drink mix may attract wildlife to a tent.

Rain Gear

Nothing makes for a more miserable outdoor experience than being wet. Being wet makes it hard to keep warm and presents a hypothermia risk, even in the summer.

A water proof, uninsulated rain shell and a pair of rain pants are ideal, as they add full coverage and can help keep your feet dry. A large poncho can work also, but has a higher risk of wet feet and lower legs.

You should purchase rain gear a size larger than you need in order to accomodate an insulated coat and pants during the winter.

Mess Kit

Mess kits will not be our primary cooking supply, so plastic is as suitable as aluminum and stainless steel. At minimum, you will need a plate and/or bowl, a fork, and a spoon. A cup and knife are convenient, but not necessary.

This is one place where you can save a little bit of money by using what is lovingly called "hoboware." Using empty sour cream containers as cups and bowls and plastic or metal silverware from a second hand store works perfectly well.

Day Pack

A simple day pack in which water, rain gear, and a few snacks can be carried will be needed for light excursions. A school backpack is suitable for these purposes.

String backpacks should be avoided. Under moderately heavy loads, the strings may lead to discomfort or bruising and are not suitable to wilderness activities.
