A step-by-step DIY wall painting tutorial
This project turns a plain wall into a bold, modern statement using painter’s tape and bright colors. It’s beginner-friendly, budget-conscious, and completely customizable.
Blue painter’s tape (1" or 1.5" wide works best)
Interior wall paint (3–6 colors recommended)
White wall paint (for base coat if needed)
Paint brushes (small angled + medium flat)
Paint roller and tray
Drop cloth or old sheets
Paper towels or rags
Pencil
Ruler or straight edge
evel (optional but helpful)
Remove wall décor, outlet covers, and furniture nearby.
Wipe the wall clean to remove dust and oils.
Lay down a drop cloth to protect the floor.
Paint the wall white (or your chosen base color) if needed.
Allow the wall to fully dry (at least 24 hours).
Tip: A smooth, clean wall gives the sharpest tape lines.
Use a pencil to lightly sketch your geometric pattern.
Mix triangle and polygon shapes in different sizes.
Avoid making everything symmetrical—random spacing looks more modern.
Don’t press hard with the pencil; lines should be barely visible.
Tip: Step back often to make sure the design feels balanced across the whole wall.
Place painter’s tape directly over your pencil lines.
Press tape edges down firmly with your fingers or a credit card.
Make sure tape lines connect cleanly at corners.
Leave some areas untaped if you want thicker white borders.
Pro Tip: Seal tape edges by lightly brushing white paint along the tape before adding color—this prevents bleeding.
Choose one color and paint inside a taped section.
Use small angled brushes near tape edges for precision.
Rotate colors so no two adjacent shapes are the same.
Apply 1–2 coats depending on paint coverage.
Let paint dry between coats.
Tip: Paint doesn’t need to be perfect—the tape does the hard work!
Use a small brush to clean up any imperfect lines.
Allow the wall to fully cure for 24–48 hours.
Reattach outlet covers and move furniture back.

Metallic accents for a glam touch
Work in good lighting
Don’t rush the drying process
Use quality painter’s tape (cheap tape bleeds!)
If you make a mistake, let it dry and paint over it
