When I was a child, I struggled in school because I had attention problems. We didnt have accomodations, 504 plans, or engaging content and technology like we do today. Luckily, I had a lot of amazing teachers with patience who taught me a great deal. Of course, I also had my share of teachers who didn't connect with me or understand me and how I learn best. Both of my parents worked in education, so I saw the impact that made on others. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I grew up, so I went to a career counselor and it said that I am suited for two careers... architect and teacher. I did a summer internship at an architecture firm in Westminster and it was one of the most boring experiences of my life. I realized how little they interact with people and that was probably not the job for me. During my senior year, I did an internship at a local elementary school and absolutely loved it. I got to work 1-1 with struggling readers doing activities planned by the ELA Specialist. Once they would get it, I could see the lightbulb go off, and I found that very rewarding and decided to major in elementary education. I did my student teaching in Carroll County and have spent my entire career there.
I am experienced educator with 18 years experience. I have been a classroom teacher, resource teacher, assistant principal and principal. People often ask me which was my favorite job, and that is hard because each job was different and presented me with challenges that helped me grow as an educator. However, for the past 18 years in my various roles, I have always advocated for mathematics instruction, resources, and professional development. I have enjoyed each position I have had and I am looking forward to the learning opportunities and challenges that Baltimore County has to offer.
