I publish — Café Royal Books, which I set up in 2005, mainly as a method of disseminating work outside of 'the gallery', having painted and exhibited fairly successfully for ten years prior. I 'quit' painting because the process generally was slow, expensive, the paintings were heavy and large and I wouldn't exhibit the work more than twice. Everything was restricting my desire to exhibit globally, make affordable work, make work that multiple people could see, in multiple locations at the same time. My 'final' painting show was part of the Liverpool Biennial 2004, alongside John Hoyland, Maurice Cockrill and John McLean.
Café Royal Books is now pretty established, far more focussed, and more exciting than ever (to me at least). I try to make democratic, utilitarian and affordable books. The books are collected by lots of galleries, libraries, universities and museums, a few of which are listed here.
I take photographs, some of which you can see on this site. I draw, both applied (illustration) and gallery based. I also make work including text based, conceptual / minimal, editions, and prints.
I enjoy the absurdity of the everyday, I like the fringes of things, I like being a tourist and I like naivety. I dislike highfalutin texts and statements. I like collaboration, archives, history, process, presenting information and putting forward ideas for discussion.
I give a lot of talks at various artist/photo book related events and to universities. I also work as a lecturer in Fine Art and Illustration. Feel free to get intouch.
