Online Homework Help

C.O.W. Department of Education

Program ENDS April 27, 2021

About the Program

Student volunteers from across C.O.W. look forward to helping our community grow and to support local students, teachers, and parents. Request a 30-minute session with a College of Wooster student for homework help in a preferred content area. This is NOT a supplemental teaching program but an opportunity to ask questions and get some additional assistance.

This program will be staffed by C.O.W. student volunteers and be delivered through Microsoft Teams. Volunteers can be scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, AND 6:00pm - 9:00pm for grades K-12 and in a wide range of subject areas.

How will the program work?

Wayne County students, teachers, or parents will use an online booking system (embedded below) to schedule a 30-minute session with an online homework helper. Sessions need to be scheduled 12 hours in advance. Volunteers are from a range of majors and minors across campus. Once booked, the student and the COW volunteer will receive an email that has a link to the scheduled session that they both will click on to use at the appointed time.

What can the C.O.W. volunteers help with?

Great question! Since this is not supplemental teaching, our volunteers are here to provide additional support. In making your booking, it is very important to be specific in the concept or skill that you are looking for support in. Ideally, this topic should be something they are currently working on for which you have materials. This kind support can look different depending on the age of the participant, but some examples may include:

  • Going over homework problems (grades 6-12)

  • Running through flashcards and assisting in content review (grades 6-12)

  • Helping with, not teaching new, basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills (elementary grades)

  • Our volunteers are not planning lessons, but they can help provide some further explanation about specific questions or concepts. For example:

    • YES - I am having trouble with long division. Can you help me review this concept?

    • NO - Can you provide additional math instruction?

    • YES - Can you review my personal narrative project with me?

    • NO - How do you write a personal narrative?

    • YES - Can you help me with this list of sight words we have been working on?

    • NO - Can you teach me sight words in general?

Please remember that this program uses a 30-minute window of time. The more focused the topic, the greater the impact.

How can my child participate?

Families and caregivers, please be sure to download Microsoft Teams onto the device (computer or mobile devices) your student plans to use for the session. No Microsoft account is necessary to participate. Please use the booking system below to sign up for a homework help session.

How does the booking service work?

Disclaimer

We are truly excited to support our community, but please know that the C.O.W. students participating in this program are not professional tutors. They are student volunteers who feel compelled to help young people in this new and uncertain time. This is NOT a supplemental teaching program but an opportunity to ask questions and get some additional assistance.

Please be understanding as we work through the many technical glitches that will occur as we try to connect 85 C.O.W. students to the thousands of students in the Wooster City Schools. It will not be perfect, but it will be done with the best of intentions.
