All Christians are familiar with the word blessing. One hymn even says, "Count your blessings, name them one by one." Undoubtedly, the concept of blessing expressed in this hymn is that blessing is a matter of being given a good wife, children, education, promotions, houses, and cars. According to this hymn, these are the blessings we should count one by one. More than thirty-five years ago, I sang this hymn during the last few hours of the year. I would gather some together and say, "Let us count the blessings of this past year, one by one." But the blessing according to the pure Word is much different from this. According to the Old Testament pattern of the blessing by the priest and the New Testament pattern of blessing by the Apostle, the proper blessing is to bring people into the presence of God and to bring God into them as grace, love, and fellowship that they may enjoy the Triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. Hence, blessing is a matter of enjoying the Triune God.

The author of these song lyrics acknowledges that you can feel burdened and life can seem unfair. So can counting your blessings really help when turmoil swirls around you and discouragement weighs heavy on your mind?

When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you his wealth untold.

Count your many blessings; money cannot buy

Your reward in heaven nor your home on high.

I have come to learn one of the best things we can do when we are feeling most lost is to take stock of our blessings. Perhaps at times these blessings may seem small, and far too insignificant compared to our trials and tribulations. I can testify to one good thing that comes of counting your blessings: recalling the good things in your life can bring about a wonderful change of attitude.

The funny thing is, this is just a starting point. Once you start listing the good things in your life, you might be surprised to find there are many more blessings you had never realized before. If you, like me, are feeling a little lost, take a moment to count your blessings.

If there is a day when we should count our blessings, it is today, Thanksgiving Day. Lamentations 3:22 reminds us that these blessings begin this morning with the dawn of a new day. If we wake up with breath in our lungs, that is a blessing worth counting. If we have a roof over our heads, that is a blessing worth counting. The family and friends the Lord puts in our lives are a tremendous blessing!

One of the many favorite hymns I love to sing at church is count your blessings. It is a hymn that puts so much into perspective when one is feeling lost and overwhelmed with the storms that life can bring into our lives.

As I continue to work on my health and try to manage everything else, I count my blessings each and every day. I have a family who loves each other with all of our quirks and imperfections. There is always so much laughter in the home, even on bad days.

I am not a native speaker. I hope I have a more or less accurate understanding of what the phrase "count your blessings" means ("not everything is bad, you should not really complain", is that so?), but I am struggling to understand the literal meaning. I only know bless from the context of "God bless monarch/country" and when someone sneezes, but I can't really connect that verb to the countable noun.

To bless properly means to bestow favor on something, with a strong implication of divine favor and luck. Blessing is a straightforward verbal noun derived from that, and it indicates those things which one has received from others without deserving it, and again has a strong connotation of those things acquired by good luck or providence. So the phrase count your blessings is an invitation to reconsider all of the things that you have which are going well, all of the ways in which you have been blessed, rather than focusing on the negative aspects of your life.

These "wondrous deeds" and "thoughts toward us," coming as they do from God, may well be interpreted as blessings; but the speaker concedes that they are uncountably many, which makes this passage a not entirely satisfactory source for the idea of "counting one's blessings." An interesting consideration of God's innumerable blessings (described, however, as "mercies") appears in an oddly belligerent sermon by Thomas Halyburton, "A Discovery of Man's Natural State ; or, The Guilty Sinner Convicted" (by 1712):

You have sinned against the God of your mercies, the God who ha loaded you with favours. O sad requital you have given to God for all the kindnesses he has done to you, since the morning of your day! ... It is not one mercy, or two, but innumerable mercies, innumerable kindnesses. Reckon, O sinners! what the mercies of God are, if you can. Nay, if ye can count the stars in the heaven, or the sand of the sea-shore, you may. David says in that 71st Psalm, "That he knows not the number of God's salvation;" and who may not say with him in this? God every day preserves you from many thousands of inconveniences that would destroy you, and bestows upon you many thousands of mercies. He loads you with his benefits, and ye load yourselves with your sins against him.

Indeed, the Bible-endorsed notion that the blessings of God are uncountably many may have acted as a force against the emergence of "count [one's] blessings" as a popular saying, since at some level the saying posits that such blessings are numerically finite.
