Working for Chesilhurst
Councilwoman Karen Chew is achieving her dream to "give back through service". Born in New York, she moved to New Jersey in 1976 and to Chesilhurst in 2005. Karen watched her parents work night and day to provide for their family, learning the value of hard work and the importance of fighting for low and middle class families along the way. As a child, Karen learned the value of a dollar as the family often relied on government food subsidies. In spite of the challenges she faced growing up, Karen overcame them, beating the odds by becoming an outstanding teacher, Military member, Councilwoman and citizen.
Karen’s childhood experiences made her realize that she wanted to dedicate her life to giving back to her community because of her opportunities to succeed. After working in both the private and public sectors, Karen began her career in public service by running for Council in 2008 and winning the seat of a long time incumbent. This was quite rewarding to Karen because she was helping develop new initiatives and solve problems to improve the lives of Chesilhurst families. She began working to bring the technology outreach up to date through an updated website, social media design and YouTube Channel.
Karen is a tireless worker and fighter for all, have served in the past and current as:
- Council President
- Liaison for Revenue and Finance
- Economic Development Committee Member
- Education Liaison
- Veterans Affairs Liaison
- Drug Alliance Coordinator
- Committees: Historical, Events, Recreation, OEM, Health & Welfare and Personnel
Karen represents the residents through her numerous networks, organizations, and legislative connections. She was re-elected to the Council on November 8, 2016.
