Cotton Fantasy: Superlative Night Dreams is a scrolling shooter game where players assume role of young witch Cotton accompanied by the fairy Silk, traveling through eight increasingly difficult stages in a fantasy dream-like world, defeating enemies and bosses on a quest to retrieve "Willow" candy for Fairyland from the villainess Tacoot.[1][2] The game incorporates role-playing game-esque mechanics, as players blasts a variety of enemies and avoid being shot while collecting crystal pick-ups to gain experience points (EXP) and level up Cotton's maximum firepower. Shooting these crystals dropped by enemies before being picked up changes their color, and each one allows Cotton to cast elemental magic spells.[1] Cotton can also use bombs to obliterate on-screen enemies and nullify enemy bullets.[1]

Cotton Fantasy: Superlative Night Dreams received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator site Metacritic.[32][33] Famitsu's four writers gave both the Switch and PS4 versions an overall positive look.[34][35] Nintendo Life's Will Freeman praised the game's variety, depth for players of any skill level, and energetic pacing. However, Freeman criticized its polygonal artstyle, mismatched character systems with certain stages, and for being occasionally "too visually busy".[36] Hardcore Gamer's Jeremy Peeples commended its music and audio design, though he stated that both the visuals and core gameplay felt like an extension of Cotton Reboot!, while the behind-the-back playstyle being relegated to special stages was seen as a negative point. Nevertheless, Peeples regarded it as "an excellent side-scrolling shooter and one with a lot of visual and audio variety."[3]

Cotton Fantasy plays much like previous games in the series, with its systems being mostly carried over from Cotton Reboot!. In addition to the traditional side-scrolling stages the game also have behind-view on-rails bonus levels similar to Panorama Cotton and Rainbow Cotton. The Jewel Fever mechanic from Reboot was reworked, with items now dropping from enemies whenever they are hit with magical spells.

The sixth installment of the Cotton series (and the first new installment in over 20 years, after Rainbow Cotton), Cotton Rock 'n' Roll celebrates the series' 30th anniversary by bringing it back to its 2D side-scrolling roots. It also features over six playable characters, most of which are guest characters from other Success and Studio Saizensen series (such as Psyvariar, Sanvein, and Umihara Kawase).

The first totally original game in the Cotton series since 2000's Rainbow Cotton, Cotton Rock'n Roll is a return to traditional 2D sidescrolling shooter action. On the hunt for the fantastical candy "Willow" once more, Cotton and her fairy friend Silk must shoot their way through a series of levels while collecting crystals and magic spells. Like in other games in the series, Cotton can collect yellow crystals floating through the air in order to power up her firepower. If she shoots crystals instead of collecting them, they change colour, with different colours allowing her to collect special magic spells that grant her one-time use powerful abilities.

Cotton Fantasy is the newest entry in the long-running Cotton series of cartoony shmups. Like previous games in the series, Cotton Fantasy tells a story of a witch on a quest to each as much magical candy as possible, while inadvertently saving the world in the process. The game consists of horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up stages with waves of enemies and challenging bullet-hell bosses. By collecting crystals, players can power up elemental spells and screen-clearing bombs to wipe out enemies more efficiently. In addition to playing as the titular character, Cotton, other player character options change the mechanics to add variety to repeat playthroughs.

The elephant in the room is that, like most arcade shmups, Cotton Fantasy is a very short game. It only took about an hour for me to go from booting up the game to rolling credits. While it offers plenty of replay value in the form of multiple player characters, unlockable extra levels, and online leaderboards, the total amount of content is considerably lighter than what most players would expect from a $40 game in 2022.

I've seen them on sale at super-inflated prices in akiba, and online at yahoo auctions Japan, but I don't really understand it. I've read that Success made these teacups to go along with the cotton games, but was it a prize giveaway, or a limited edition version of the games, or like a mail-order thing, or something else? I've heard only a few hundred were sold for each variety, which is part of my curiosity that they don't seem to actually be that "rare", meaning they are limited in quantity but people don't seem to hold onto them very tightly.

If you have played any of the other side-scrolling Cotton games, then you pretty much know what to expect, as Cotton Fantasy is not entirely different from the previous entries in the series. But even those who have celebrated every title in the Cotton catalog, Fantasy does offer up a few new features that help mix up the game a bit over multiple playthroughs.
