(PLEASE NOTE: This course is only available in ZAR)

2 days. Local and International

This course is intended and will provide practical guidelines for those involved in the pavement rehabilitation of surfaced roads. It is not intended as a manual on routine road maintenance but for larger rehabilitation projects requiring more sophisticated inputs and design considerations. Construction would also be on a larger scale, most often requiring the use of specialist contractors. Un-surfaced or gravel roads are not covered in these notes as they require special but more routine maintenance work than a surfaced road.

The southeast tip of Africa is an amazing place for multiethnic cultures and geographical peculiarities. Lesotho is one of only three countries surrounded by another, in this case South Africa. Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is one of only seven countries surrounded by two countries (Mozambique and South Africa). Durban has over one million ethnic-Indians, making it one of the largest concentrations outside of India for a city. Clarens is an artist haven named after a village in Switzerland.

About 30 km / 18 miles from the Goba crossing at the Eswatini border, our cheap Toyota Starlet had some of the plastic undercarriage come off, and then the passenger-side, front-tire ripped. This was a rural area without a lot of traffic. It was surprising this happened as we stuck to national highways and did not go on 4WD roads.

For each of the two nights in Mbabane, we had excellent dinners. Ramblas Restaurant claims to be the best in the city, and it well might be, serving local, Catalan and international dishes. The Velvet Monkey is an excellent Italian restaurant then managed by a young man from southern Italy. Here we had dinner with George, a United Nations colleague of Khadija and fellow Kenyan, and his wife. He was the UN Resident Coordinator for Eswatini and was able to describe the interworking of the government and the economy. The next day we met him at his office.

We had lost a day fixing the car, so we could not explore any other attractions in Eswatini. We drove south through a constantly transforming landscape of mountains, hills and agricultural plains. We kept driving as we crossed the border to South Africa and then arrived in Durban that night.

Durban and South Africa in general have been experiencing a deterioration of public service, especially electricity blackouts on a daily basis. The country appears to be at a crossroads and hopefully, it can manage its deep-seated issues and progress economically and socially.

Semonkong is an area with small villages and near several natural attractions. Semonkong Lodge is an ideal place to stay to explore the region. Accessing the lodge without an SUV was challenging, as most off-highway roads are in Lesotho.

I had spent four years living in Cape Town but, despite having heard the legends of the Wild Coast's windswept dunes, never made it to this 155-mile stretch on the other side of the country. Though the Eastern Cape is South Africa's third-most-populous province, the rugged Wild Coast isn't as frequently tackled by tourists as well-trammeled circuits like the Western Cape's Garden Route, KwaZulu Natal's Midlands Meander, and Mpumalanga's Panorama Route. These, with their proximity to major airports, cavalcade of rustic padstals (farm stalls) plucked from Pinterest boards, and well-stocked tourist offices plying travelers with maps and coupons, are obvious choices for out-of-towners. The Wild Coast is more ambitious, but it rewards those who want to get off the grid to hike and braai (barbecue) along secluded cliffs. Gas stations are infrequent and the roads pocked with potholes, but the unmarred beaches are worth a little havoc on your car's suspension.

On this return visit to South Africa, I was determined to finally take on the drive; my friend Rajnee, now on the tail end of an expat stint in the country herself, was eager to come along for one last adventure. Together we consulted maps, researched online, and asked friends for advice before charting an itinerary: Fly into Durban, the underrated eastern seaside city so often eclipsed by Cape Town's glamour and Johannesburg's vitality, then head south, stopping at coastal towns, before returning the rental car at East London Airport.

South Africa arguably has a habitual speeding problem on the roads," said Lee Annamalai, Chief Technology Officer of GeoInt Africa, a location and geospatial intelligence company focused on improving road safety through software.

In South Africa, as in many other countries, it's mandatory to have a single-point" speed limiter in heavy vehicles, which is normally fitted by the OEM. But these speed limits are usually set quite high, so there's still the capacity to exceed the speed limit, especially on lower-speed roads.

About 25 million kilometres of new roads are expected to be built around the world by 2050. Along with power lines and railways, roads cut through the landscape everywhere, disrupting ecosystems. This linear infrastructure prevents animals from moving safely around their habitat. It also reduces access to the resources they need, like food, sufficient space and mating partners.

All species were affected, mostly by roads. We found a total of 483 deaths captured in the databases between 1996 and 2021. The number of deaths is likely to be a lot higher, due to under-reporting. Targeted species- and area-specific surveys are needed to refine this dataset.

Since 2011, the Endangered Wildlife Trust has received records from systematic patrols on certain highways and species -and area-specific expert research surveys. Citizen science data comes from all over the country including national and regional roads, with differing speed limits, widths and vehicle usage.

The drive out to the Cape of Good Hope is one of the most spectacular drives I have ever done. Twisting roads cut into the mountain and every turn reveals a view of the ocean that is even better than the last. The lookout points will blow your mind! The drive to the Cape is about an hour and a half from central Cape Town. As you drive by the various towns along the way there are small signs for the beaches, I recommend parking your car and get out for a twenty minute beach stroll or even a run! Along the drive you will also see an ostrich farm. I had to stop and feed them as they were so symbolic of our travels in South Africa.

The Little Karoo has an outback feel that is nothing like Cape Town or the Garden Route. Tiny restaurants serving ostrich and sweet wines give this area a rustic and authentic feel. Making your way to the sweet wines of Calitzdorp, roadside artists, wineries, and rough cut bars line the rural area.

Choosing one depends on you goals and desires, generally speaking the North to South route on the East coast is the easiest. Traveling through relatively developed Kenia, Tanzania and South Africa where the roads are mostly paved as long as you stay on the main roads. The biggest hurdle on this stretch is Ethiopia which is notoriously unstable so check before you go if the country is open or caught up in a civil war.

No, it is unpractical to go from the Kenya to Nigeria by road down however it is not impossible. The shortest route through CAR and South Sudan is not safe. You will have to plan a detour through the south of DRC or even Zambia to find decent roads to drive. Adding at least 1000km to the journey of 6 weeks.

For more than a decade, alcohol evidence centers (AECs) have helped make roads safer in South Africa by enabling law enforcement to test suspected drunk drivers and confirm their breath limit. Today there are 10 brick and mortar AECs and ten mobile units throughout the country, thanks to a joint effort between municipalities, law enforcement and our local brewer, South African Breweries.

When I told my friends I was planning to drive solo through South Africa, they immediately tried to talk me out of it, envisioning dangerous roads, thieves, and no one to help should something go wrong.

I also suggest embarking on a day trip to the nearby Cape Peninsula, the most south-western point of South Africa. Read more here about the best day trips from Cape Town. In fact, stay tuned for whole blog post dedicated to an ultimate guide to Cape Town!

When I visited Joburg, summer was just beginning. I meandered down roads lined with jacaranda as people spilled from pubs and bars into the sunlit streets. The atmosphere of festivity was the perfect way to spend my last days in South Africa. 589ccfa754
