In both the 2004 and 2024 tellings of Mean Girls, Regina rejects Janis in 6th grade. In 2004, Regina claims that it was because Janis was getting "weirdly jealous" of her dating Kyle. In 2024, Regina believed Janis had a secret crush on her and began undermining Janis socially. In both cases, what if Regina's response to Janis was an overcompensation to the romantic feelings that she was developing for Janis? 

    For Regina, a developing 12-year-old learning to pass in a heteronormative, predominantly white, upper-class setting, to develop these feelings for Janis would be against the image that she had been crafting of her self. The self "is not a mental construct but a bodily phenomenon. To be in touch with oneself means to sense and be in touch with one's feelings. To know one's feelings, one has to experience them in their full intensity and that can only be done by expressing them" (Lowen 67). 

    If Regina could not express her feelings for Janis, they would be suppressed. This, as a result, would mean that any time Regina might either be in question as to her feelings for others means that she would have to defend her image by projecting her feelings onto Janis so overtly that no one would ever question Regina's sexuality. Ergo, "Why are you so obsessed with me?" This state of cognitive dissonance (constant suppression and denial) would lead to a state of "insanity" Lowen states. He says, "Insantiy develops when the ego or the conscious mind is overwhelmed by a feeling it cannot integrate" (Lowen 171). 

    What is the ultimate trigger that launches the Mean Girls story? Cady. Janis's new friend. 

     At the beginning of Mean Girls, Janis only has one friend: Damien. As a gay man, Regina would natually have zero interest in him. @AnnieDoesLife states on TikTok: "If Janice had a boyfriend, Regina would have stolen him (2024)." Damien was the one friend Regina could allow Janis to have, as he was never a threat to her. However, with the arrival of Cady, the dynamic Regina previously had under control begins to unravel. 

     Coach Jackie J on TikTok states in her video essay that Cady is making Regina jealous because she's becoming friends with Janis, which leads to Regina flirting with Cady and compensating with "cumpolsory hetero behivior" (2023). We see this as Regina begins to use Aaron against Cady to make her jealous later in the story. As her anxiety towards Janis and Cady's relationship grows, she uses Aaron to keep Cady both in line (and away from Janis) while keeping her image of the ultimate woman in place. 

     Renee Rapp's (Regina 2024) belief that she believed that Regina was a lesbian. This does not mean Regina herself consciously knew nor accepted this reality which makes Regina nor only an infinitely more intriguing character, but a relatable one for many women in 2026.
