What we hoped to embody in the mural in our partnership with Albert Lea's CVB was the delight that dwells in this town in the summer. We were so inspired by what activities call in the summertime to those who spend it in Albert Lea both human and animal alike.
We even added our own experiences into the mural, this flower behind me was the first flower to bloom at our house in 2026 after making it through our first Minnesota winter!
Willy's Iris
One of our favorite things about moving up north as being able to experience the richness of the seasons. One thing we never had been able to experience was how surprising all the flowers were. Not only were there so many that we had never seen outside of Europe, but how delightful it was that in the summer in Albert Lea that each week there seems to be a new flowers whose time it is to shine. The colors of the mural are inspired by all of flowers we have stopped to admire (and take far too many pictures of) in the past year of living in Albert Lea.
This mural, like most projects, came at the right time for us. Just two days before we started the mural, we lost our oldest cat, Willy. It was a day I knew was coming (and had struggled to take my eye off of since Reddington passed), but, when it came, it came hard.
This mural project gave us a medium to start the grieving process, and, most importantly, got us out of the house and creating. We poured Willy's favorite parts of Albert Lea, the flowers and the sunshine, into the mural. Willy never was able to go outside when we lived in Texas and, since we moved to Minnesota, Willy was able to discover the wonders of all four seasons himself in Albert Lea and there was nothing better we could have given him for his last year.
