About the Conference
The aim of this conference is to bring together mathematicians working on groups, graphs, manifolds, etc., in the context of probability (random walks, Brownian motion), harmonic analysis, potential theory, ergodic theory, geometric group theory and related topics. The title indicates a central topic but is not to be considered the exclusive theme.
During the conference, we shall celebrate the 70th birthday of Wolfgang Woess. The topics of the conference are therefore mostly related with the work of Wolfgang Woess.
This conference may be viewed as a continuation of a series of conferences on similar topics, such as:
Random walks and discrete potential theory, Cortona 1997
Random walks and geometry Erwin Schrödinger Institute, Vienna 2001
Geometric group theory, random walks, and harmonic analysis, Cortona 2004
ESI Educational Workshop on Discrete Probability, ESI Vienna 2006
Groups, Graphs, and Random Walks, Cortona 2014
Conference venue
The meeting at Villa Passerini ("Il Palazzone") in Cortona, promoted by INdAM (Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica) is possible thanks to the existence of an agreement between Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and INdAM. The agreement establishes rules about the use of the Palazzone, in particular concerning the persons hosted in the Villa.
Cortona is a small town in southern Tuscany, going back Etruscan time, situated on a hill 20km North of Lake Trasimeno. Place of the meeting is the "Palazzone", a 16th century castle 2km outside of Cortona in a typical Tuscan landscape of olive and wine gardens. The Palazzone is owned by the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, who rents it to the INdAM for several meetings every year.
