If you want a wireless headset for school with over-ear comfort and flexible wired connections, choose Corsair HS70; if you need compact earphones for school with active noise cancelling and a charging case, choose Mackie MP-20TWS. For a student who also games, the Corsair’s mix of USB, 3.5 mm, and Bluetooth gives it the edge; the Mackie is the more portable choice for moving between classes and listening on the go.
• Corsair HS70: Over-ear memory foam ear cups, a detachable noise-cancelling microphone, and USB, 3.5 mm, and Bluetooth connections. The trade-off is that it is a headset rather than a small, pocketable pair of earbuds.
• Mackie MP-20TWS: True wireless earbuds with hybrid active noise cancelling, dual drivers, and a charging case. The trade-off is shorter stated battery life per earbud charge and no listed wired audio connection.
• For school calls and gaming: Corsair HS70 suits students who want a boom-style microphone and can use a wired connection for compatible devices.
• For travel and everyday listening: Mackie MP-20TWS suits students who want earbuds, active noise cancelling, and a case that adds listening time.
The Corsair HS70 is an over-ear gaming headset built around 50 mm neodymium drivers and adjustable ear cups with memory foam padding. That design makes it a sensible fit for students who want one headset for computer work, gaming, and voice chat. The larger ear cups cover the ears, while the padded fit is intended for extended sessions. The headset’s frequency range is listed as 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and USB audio supports 24-bit/96 kHz. Those details make it a versatile choice for listening at a desk, not a compact option for slipping into a pocket.
Its connection options are the main practical advantage. It supports USB wired audio, a 3.5 mm connection, and Bluetooth. The product information describes using wired game audio while connecting Bluetooth to a mobile device for chat. That arrangement could be useful when a student is at a computer or console and also wants to stay connected to a phone. There is an important compatibility caveat: Bluetooth microphone use depends on the connected device, and the product information notes that Nintendo Switch microphone use is wired rather than Bluetooth. The detachable, unidirectional noise-cancelling microphone is useful for voice communication, but students should check the connection method their device supports before relying on it.
How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
Battery life is listed as up to 30 hours, which gives the HS70 a clear advantage over the Mackie’s stated earbud runtime between charges. It also supports Windows Sonic surround sound for 360-degree game audio. Those are gaming-oriented features that may appeal to a student who wants a headset to handle more than lectures or music. The trade-off is its over-ear form: it is less discreet and portable than true wireless earbuds. Its Bluetooth version is 4.2, while the Mackie lists Bluetooth 5.2, so the Mackie has the newer listed version.
Who should skip it: Skip the HS70 if you want tiny earbuds for walking between classes or prefer a fully wireless, case-based setup.
The Mackie MP-20TWS takes the opposite approach: it is a pair of true wireless, in-ear earbuds with a charging case. Its hybrid dual-driver design combines balanced armature and dynamic drivers. For a student choosing head phones for school mainly for music, videos, or listening while commuting, that design offers a different proposition from the Corsair’s large gaming drivers. The listed Bluetooth version is 5.2, and the earbuds are designed for wireless listening rather than USB or 3.5 mm wired use.
Active noise cancelling is a key reason to consider the Mackie. Its hybrid noise-cancelling system is paired with three microphones per side, which the product information identifies as supporting noise cancelling and call quality. That may suit a student who wants to reduce surrounding sound while listening or make calls without wearing a large headset. It does not mean every distracting sound disappears, and the data does not specify a noise-reduction level. The practical point is that active noise cancelling is part of this model’s feature set, while the Corsair’s listed strengths center more on gaming connections, comfort, and microphone use.
The case adds to the Mackie’s portability. The earbuds are listed with up to 13 hours of battery life, and the case adds over 40 hours of play time. That gives students a way to extend listening between access to a charger, though it is important to distinguish the earbud runtime from the additional case runtime. The earbuds also have an IPX4 waterproof rating, touch controls, and compatibility with Siri and Google. Three sizes of included eartips provide options for fit, and USB-C fast charging is listed. These are convenient travel-focused features, but the product information does not establish a particular fit for every ear.
Who should skip it: Skip the MP-20TWS if you need an over-ear headset, a detachable microphone, or a wired connection for your school device.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best for earphones for school → Mackie MP-20TWS. Its true wireless design and charging case are easier to carry than an over-ear headset.
• Best for connection flexibility → Corsair HS70. USB, 3.5 mm, and Bluetooth give it more ways to connect than the Mackie’s listed Bluetooth connection.
• Best for active noise cancelling → Mackie MP-20TWS. Hybrid ANC is a named feature, supported by three microphones on each side.
• Best for stated battery life between charges → Corsair HS70. Its listed battery life is up to 30 hours, compared with up to 13 hours for the Mackie earbuds.
• Best for extending listening time with a case → Mackie MP-20TWS. Its case adds over 40 hours of play time according to the product information.
• Best for a detachable voice microphone → Corsair HS70. Its unidirectional microphone detaches, while the Mackie uses built-in microphones in the earbuds.
• Best for a splash-resistant rating → Mackie MP-20TWS. It has an IPX4 rating; no equivalent water-resistance rating is listed for the Corsair.
For school, I would choose the Corsair HS70 if I wanted one device for computer use, gaming, and voice chat. Its longer stated battery life, detachable microphone, and wired connection options make it the more adaptable headset for that mix. The Mackie MP-20TWS is my pick for students who value portability, active noise cancelling, and a case that extends listening time. My overall recommendation is the Corsair for a student who wants a headset first; choose the Mackie if earbuds are the priority.
Before choosing, think about where you will use the device most. A student working at a desk may appreciate the Corsair’s over-ear fit and the option to connect by USB or 3.5 mm. Someone who carries their audio gear between classes may find the Mackie’s earbuds and charging case more practical. Neither format is automatically more comfortable: the Corsair has padded ear cups, while the Mackie includes three eartip sizes, so personal fit preference matters.
Also check the connection requirements of your school device. The Corsair’s multiple wired options offer flexibility, but Bluetooth microphone support depends on the device. The product information specifically notes that Switch microphone use requires a wired connection. The Mackie is Bluetooth-only according to its listed connectivity, so it is not the choice if you need a wired audio path. If your main concern is reducing environmental noise, the Mackie has the clearer feature match because it lists hybrid active noise cancelling; if your main concern is a voice microphone you can detach, the Corsair is the more direct fit.
For schoolwork and gaming at a computer, the Corsair offers over-ear padding, a detachable microphone, and USB or 3.5 mm wired connections. For carrying earbuds between classes, the Mackie is more compact and includes active noise cancelling and a charging case.
The Corsair HS70 lists up to 30 hours of battery life. The Mackie MP-20TWS lists up to 13 hours for the earbuds, with its case adding over 40 hours of play time.
Yes. Its features include hybrid active noise cancelling, with three microphones per side also specified for noise cancelling and call quality. The product information does not state a measured level of noise reduction.
Bluetooth microphone use depends on the connected device. The product information notes that some devices, including Nintendo Switch, require a wired connection for microphone use.
