Objective: This activity helps students activate their prior knowledge, set reading goals, and identify what they want to learn from the novel.
Procedure:
Introduction to the Novel:
Introduce the title and cover of the book to the class. Provide a brief overview of the author, setting, and any other relevant background information.
KWL Chart Setup:
Draw a large KWL chart on the board or create a digital version to share with students. Label the three columns as follows:
K (Know): What students already know about the topic or themes of the book.
W (Want to Know): What students want to learn or find out more about while reading the book.
L (Learned): What students have learned from reading the book.
Brainstorming:
In the "K" column, ask students to brainstorm and share what they already know about the book's themes, setting, characters, or the author's background. Encourage them to draw on their prior knowledge and personal experiences.
Setting Goals:
In the "W" column, have students write down questions or topics they are curious about and want to learn more about as they read the book. These could relate to specific characters, plot points, cultural aspects, or social issues.
Prediction and Discussion:
Before reading, ask students to make predictions about what they think will happen in the book based on the title, cover, and any background information they have. Encourage them to share their predictions with the class and discuss their reasoning.
Chart Completion:
Leave the "L" column blank for now. Explain that students will fill in this column as they read the book and discover new information or insights.
Closure:
After completing the pre-reading activity, discuss the KWL chart with the class. Review their prior knowledge, goals, and predictions, and emphasize the importance of actively engaging with the text to learn new things.
