STEP 1 - REVIEW PROGRAM

Review

Review the program at international.hufs.ac.kr >>> Exchange Program

2021 International Summer Session will be online - please see: http://www.hufsiss.online.

All of the information should be available in this guide as well :-).

Step 2 - Review Changes/Notices for 2020

Intensive Korean Language Program Price/Discount Change

From Fall 2019, the fee for the Intensive Korean Language program during Summer/Winter sessions was passed on to students with a discount of 35%. From Fall 2020, the price is being raised slightly to 1,620,000 KRW, and the discounted amount to students is 30%. The discounted amount starting from Fall 2020 for Summer/Winter sessions is nos 1,141,000 KRW.

New Business College Course Restrictions

The Office of International Admissions and Management was informed as of late January 2020 that courses from the Business College are under going additional restrictions for registration. These new restrictions are:

      • Major - students with a first major as business at HUFS get priority

      • Student Type - regular HUFS students get priority

      • Course Registration Period

Exchange students will be unable to register for classes from the Business College during Round 1, and can ONLY try to register for these classes from Wednesday to Friday during Round 2 the first week of the semester. These classes have become extremely competitive and Business College is limiting registration to Exchange and Visiting students unfortunately. It is very unlikely that your students will be able to register for any classes from the Business College.

If you examine the Business College's course list in the Course Finder, you will see additional information in the Note section:

20학번 신입생 대상(신청기간은 신입생만/ 변경기간 설명 학부홈페이지 반드시 참고 요망)

      • For new students (Freshman) only

1전공자 우선수강 (신청기간은 1전공만/ 변경기간 설명 학부홈페이지 반드시 참고 요망)

      • Priority course for First-Major students during Course Registration

While these courses are not "technically" restricted, we advise you to consider thinking of these particular classes as restricted and to inform students accordingly.

Health Forms for the Dormitory

Since many countries are currently under official shelter-in-place orders, and hospitals are only offering essential services, your students can complete the health form at a later date and send it to us when the the novel corona virus situation has improved in the summer. Similarly, it is possible to get the health form completed at a clinic in front of our campus - it costs around 30,000 KRW.

This form is technically only needed for entry to the dorms, not admission to the exchange program but it is more efficient/easier to get it completed at the same time.

2021 International Summer Session

This will be held online this year - if you're students are interested, please encourage them to apply. See http://www.hufsiss.online.

Step 3 - COVID-19 Entry Requirements and Quarantine Measures

Quarantine Accommodations

    • Since April 2020 there are entry requirements and quarantine measures for all travellers from abroad.

    • For D-2-6 Visa holders, you must arrange your own quarantine accommodations. The easiest way to do this is via an AirBnB in Mapo or Yongsan districts (the area matters for food delivery service from Shuttle Delivery if you plan on using it, see below).

    • Students recommended sharing an AirBnB together to reduce costs and increase their living spaces. The flat should have a separate bedroom for each person.

    • Students must arrange these before coming to Korea otherwise they will not be allowed to pass through Immigration.

Food Service

    • Students also need to plan ahead for Food Service. We know of two ways to order/pay for food using non-Korean credit cards, and without Korean cell service/SIM card with phone service:

        1. Pack Your Own Food

          • Some students brought an extra carrier with enough non-perishable food for two weeks - this is very easy to prepare in advance in your home country.

        2. Shuttle Delivery: https://www.shuttledelivery.co.kr/en

          • Only delivers to certain locations - Yongsan-gu and Mapo-gu are the best locations (i.e., many restaurants that deliver in these areas).

          • Due to high demand and peak times, delivery can sometimes take 2-3 hours.

        3. Gmarket: http://www.gmarket.com

          • Accepts foreign credit cards - but you must make an account.

          • Prices can be more expensive when searching in English.

          • Food items are typically sold in BULK.

        4. AirBnB Hosts

          • Some hosts were kind enough to help students with food service; students may want ask in advance if an AirBnB host can assist with ordering, paying for, and delivering food.

Pre-Arrival Preparation

  • Please have students DOWNLOAD and TEST food service applications in their home countries with their payment methods BEFORE arriving in Korea.

SIM Cards

  • Many students recommend preparing a Korean cell phone/service in advance. You can also get a SIM card but you need to make sure your cell phone is not region-locked. You can get these at the airport, but, it is better to prepare this in advance before arriving in Korea.

Step 4 - Class Delivery Methods Overview

Will classes be online or offline?

There is no way for us to answer this question except for "it depends". HUFS has a detailed three-tiered plan that describes when/which classes can meet given the current COVID-19 conditions in Korea. This plan is based on government guidelines from the Ministry of Education as well as the KCDC. Thus, since we cannot know future conditions, all we can really tell you is "it depends".

What is HUFS' plan for classes in terms of social distancing measures?

See this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18jDCofanH60xEGH7RaZ-leHGC977ltiy/view?usp=sharing.

Please note, this plan is subject to change.

How do students access their online classes?

These are, at a minimum, going to show up in HUFS' E-Class System. However, individual instructors may use other platforms and/or tools to conduct their classes. Students will get this information in E-Class, or the instructor will email students directly with instructions.

Are online classes asynchronous or synchronous?

It depends on the individual instructor of the class. However, many of the "asynchronous" classes require you to login to E-Class (or the platform/tool chosen by the instructor) to participate in some virtual activities (such as watching a lecture) at the same time the class is scheduled to meet on campus as a form of attendance.

What are the online classes like at HUFS?

We surveyed both Spring (n=140) and Fall 2020 (n=93) exchange students. The responses were 53.23% and 56.02% respectively. Students reported the following about the characteristics of their classes:

Student Course Load

  • 1-2 26.42%

  • 3-5 60.71%

  • 6-9 12.84%

Course Size (# of Students)

  • 1-20 39.5%

  • 21-40 44.3%

  • 41-60 15.7%

Course Type/Course Load

  • Asynchronous 8.6%

  • Synchronous 28.6

  • Both Types 62.9%

Types of Course Activities

  • Discussion Forums 10.7%

  • Small Group Projects 12.9%

  • Self-study Assignments 19.7%

  • Live Group (text) Chats 9.2%

  • Video Conferencing (Live Lectures) 27.9%

  • Pre-recorded Lectures 19.7%

STEP 5 - NomiNATE STUDENTS

Nominations

Nominate your students through the HUFS Online Portal: https://webs.hufs.ac.kr/src08/jsp/fexchange/index.html

First time?

Please read our Online Nomination System Guideline's Portal Instructions.

    • Enter your nominated students' names, dates of birth, gender, and email addresses.

    • Our system will then generate an ID and password for each of your students and send emails to the addresses you provided.

        • *Please be careful when inputting students’ birth dates as those will be used as passwords for your students’ online applications.

    • If your university doesn't appear in the online portal, this is likely because you are a relatively new partner and have not sent students to us before- please contact us so we can activate your account*.

        • *In certain cases, your university may have two accounts: one for a bilateral agreement, one for CONASEP.

        • CONASEP accounts will always begin with CO-XXXXXXX.

No slots available?

Send us an email to exchange@hufs.ac.kr so we can fix it for you.

STEP 6 - Have STUDENTS APPLY

Student Applications

HUFS Online Portal: https://webs.hufs.ac.kr/src08/jsp/fexchange/index.html

Students complete their online applications by October 30/April 30 using the login ID and PW (their birthdate in YYYYMMDD format) generated by our online application system from your nominations.

STEP 7 - Have students Submit Requred DOCUMENTS

New Google Form Document Submission Method - Please READ!!!

Google Form Document Submission: https://forms.gle/DbPQcqab1DsvSTit6

We have developed a new document submission method using Google Forms where we are asking students to provide some basic information in addition to their documents. Please review our video tutorial where we demonstrate what this process looks like, and how easy it is. Many of our students and partners already use Google Suites at their institutions or have personal Google Accounts so we believe there should be minimal disruption to your outbound support in this regard.

If students cannot make a Google Account easily (e.g., students in China), please have them fill out this form but skip the document submission portion- these can be emailed to us: exchange@hufs.ac.kr. Please send each item as a separate file instead of a single PDF. We know this is a change from years past!

Required Documents

Please submit the following documents using our Google Form: https://forms.gle/DbPQcqab1DsvSTit6

    1. Printed version of Online Exchange Application form

        • Use the "Print Application" button and simply "print/save as PDF" function in your browser.

    2. 1 brief essay of personal history and plan of study

    3. 1 copy of academic transcript

    4. 1 certificate of current enrollment at home university

    5. 1 copy of evidence of proficiency in English/Korean language (e.g., official test scores, university test scores) or reference letter if applicable

    6. 1 copy of the information page of passport

    7. Dorm application form (click to download)*

        • *Health examination form (Dorm applicants only)

        • All dormitory applicants must send in a scanned copy of completed health form signed by the doctor to reserve dormitory and they must also present the original copy as they check-in at the HUFS dormitory.

        • These can also be completed at a clinic in front of Seoul campus for about 20-30,000 KRW.

    8. COLOR ID photo (3X4cm) with white background color in .jpg format (only .jpg works in our ID card printer software).
