"Control" is the debut solo single by German singer Zoe Wees, from her debut EP Golden Wings. It released by Valeria Music on 13 March 2020 as the lead single from the EP. Written by Wees, Patrick Pyke Salmy, Emma Sophia Rosen, Ricardo Muoz, Ren Miller, and Nils Bodenstedt, the song is a power ballad and about the singer's anxiety and lack of control due to her struggles with epilepsy.[1]

The hypothesis was tested that weak theory of mind (ToM) and/or emotion recognition (ER) abilities are specific to subjects with autism. Differences in ToM and ER performance were examined between autistic (n = 20), pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) (n = 20), psychiatric control (n = 20), and normal children (n = 20). The clinical groups were matched person-to-person on age and verbal IQ. We used tasks for the matching and the context recognition of emotional expressions, and a set of first- and second-order ToM tasks. Autistic and PDD-NOS children could not be significantly differentiated from each other, nor could they be differentiated from the psychiatric controls with a diagnosis of ADHD (n = 9). The psychiatric controls with conduct disorder or dysthymia performed about as well as normal children. The variance in second-order ToM performance contributed most to differences between diagnostic groups.

In her interview with Genius, Wees described how "Control" was one of the first songs she ever wrote with a group of professional songwriters, and she was inspired by her childhood struggles with benign rolandic epilepsy. Her mission in writing the song was to say thank you to her primary school teacher, who Wees said helped push her along as a young girl, helping her become the megawatt stage presence she is today. Lyrics like "Don't know if you get it 'cause I can't express how thankful I am/ That you were always with me when it hurts, I know that you'd understand/ I don't wanna lose control/ Nothing I can do anymore/ Tryin' every day when I hold my breath" express the significance to Wees's life.

Growing up in an underprivileged part of Hamburg, Zoe has had to carry a heavy burden from an early age: She develops childhood epilepsy as a young girl and has since lived a life in fear of the loss of control over her own body.

Throughout the song, Zoe Wees conveys the message that it is okay to feel overwhelmed and lose control at times. She encourages her listeners to acknowledge their vulnerabilities and find the strength within themselves to rise above their circumstances. Her lyrics remind us that we have the power to overcome adversity and shape our own destiny.
