This wikiHow teaches you how to assign a special ringtone to an individual contact on your Android. If you're using a Samsung model, you can use the Phone app to do this. If you have another model of Android, such as a Pixel, OnePlus, or Moto handset, you can use Google Contacts.

I have run all updates on the phone (Android, Google and Samsung), it is using Android 11 and says the software is up-to-date. I have tried editing a few contacts and even adding new ones to see if the ringtone option would show up, and it does not.

When you're in the Edit mode on the relevant contact, tap "More..." as you did previously, look for the "Allow permissions" option, and tap it, then grant the required access permission, and viola, the option name has now changed to "Ringtone". Should be smooth sailing from here on...

When you've done this step once, the Contacts app now has the necessary permission, meaning that you'll now see the "Ringtone" option under "More..". if you want to customize ringtones for any further contacts of yours.

I tried Zedge and it didn't work, but thank you for the suggestion Ma. I also tried Super Scary Ringtones and Loud Alarm Ringtones (which I have successfully used on my Note 3 for years), and like Zedge, when I select a tone, then select a contact to assign it to, the app just closes and a pop-up says "The App Keeps Unexpectadly Closing - Would you Like to Remove it?"

I have used those apps with no issues ever on my Note 3 and my husbands S9. This Note 20 wont allow me to use a third party app or the phones OS to assign any individual ringtones to any contact - there is no option for that anywhere. This has to be an OS issue somehow.

When editing a contact, there is an option at the bottom that says "View more" in that section it will show items that are not being used, Ringtone is one of these options, click it, and then assign the ring tone from the list of sounds on your device.

Maybe try importing a contact from your old device, or from your spouses phone that has a ring tone assigned? You can share contacts by clicking on them, then click the 3 dot menu, and select QR code, scan that with your Note 20... Maybe this will "unlock" that option is my thinking.

I too am a techie, and I like helping people solve problems with their devices. To that end, I have a few more things I would like to ask. Are you on OneUI 3.0 (Android 11)? Have you verified that ringtone is not already an option on the contact you are checking on (the View More option ONLY has options that are not already set)? Asuming Yes to both the above, try creating the following folders on the root of your phone, if they are not already there (would say on the root of the SD card too, but Samsung did not grace the Note20 with such a reader for some reason...):

Story does have a happy ending. Texted my spouse on lack of progress. Response with custom ringtone....RANG. Sent another sms to call me. Phone rang with custom tone !!! Then had my son sms and call me. His custom ringtone and text toneworked as expected.

Somewhere during the investigation / analysis, the custom ringtone problem resolved itself. Just don't know what we did. Glad it works !.....Cancelled Genius bar and will monitor to see if problem remains fixed.......

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand a custom ringtone is not working, and we'd like to assist. It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far. Are you not hearing any sound at all? Are other custom ringtones working? Have you changed the one for your spouse and then changed it back again? We recommend updating to iOS 15.1.1 if you haven't done so yet. Also, have you checked your Focus settings?

I do want to delete or block the contact I just want there phone calls to be silenced when they call. They have a feature to hide alerts in the messages but I want to silence the contact when they call not block them. In previous versions, you were able to use none as a ringtone, now only alerts such as voicemail, text tone, or email, etc have the none option.

Learn how to change the sound that plays when you get a call, text, email, or other notification on your iPhone or iPad. Choose from a variety of built-in sounds or buy ringtones from the iTunes Store.

I have many ringtones for my contacts on previous Note4. When I try to assign a tone to a contact on the PixelXL, it will still use the default. I have tried using the method suggested by Google. Is there a different method for the same phone on VZW?

Go to Contacts on your phone, then find the contact you want to set a ringtone ... tap the three dots to the right of the pencil icon .. then Set ringtone. From there you should be able to set a ringtone for that contact only. It works on my Pixel - what happens on yours?

That's what has worked on my Pixel - and my husband's. Most of our contacts do use the default, but we have a couple (like each other) where we have a specific ringtone when that person calls. It works this way on ours, and I'm not sure why it isn't on yours.

I am trying to allocate a specific ringtone to my wifes contact in my samsung a54 so that i know immediately it is her ringing me. BUT. all of the advice i have found on goggle or watched in videos explains a process of how to do it BUT the procedure they talk about cannot be followed on my phone !!!! I call up my wife's contact on my phone , press the "i" button and then the contact opens up.. At the bottom of the screen i press the 3 little dots and click on "Edit default Contact" and then scroll all the way down but there is no option to change the ringtone. Everywhere i have looked so far gives me the same procedure to change the ring tone , but that procedure does not work on my phone. Am i doing something wrong or is there another way to do this ?????? Many thanks Jimmy

I use Google Voice for all incoming calls. When someone calls me, their contact information (picture, phone number, name) shows up on the screen. However, the ringtone that is used is not the custom ringtone assigned to that contact, but the default ringtone. What can I do?

I'm not sure of the specifics of how GVoice works, but keep in mind that your contacts are calling Google and Google is calling you. Somehow they pass on your contact's number, but it's spoofed, and your phone is probably relying on the "real" number (i.e. Google's number) for choosing the ringtone.

Granted I understand that, in a normal circumstance, a custom ring is only available for a call that comes from one's contact or phone list. However, simply added an entry for "Restricted" in my contact list does not work. Does anyone have an idea on this?

You can put all of the contacts in your list into a group and assign the group with a ringtone, and set the default ringtone as something else. This way anyone not stored in your phone will ring with a different tone to anyone you have stored.

As far as I know no, they're restricted number but they're still treated as different numbers. I doubt that the phone would be able to set a ringtone due to it not being a contact and it needs to know the number to be able to know what ringtone to play otherwise it will play the default ringtone. As it doesn't know the restricted calls number it'll play the default ringtone.

Johndroid. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Right now I was looking for an answer to set a ringtone to private numbers (that's what appears in my cell phone when somebody calls and doesn't show the tel. number) in Google.com and then I saw this Spiceworks.com web site and I decided to check if there was an answer waiting for me and I read your suggestion and Voila! Your suggetion was the best thing I could do for my cell phone. Now If that private number phone calls appears again even if I see it, at least no gonna bother my ears X-D

You might be tired of hearing the same ringtone you've had for years since you last budgeted for a new Android phone. Most people don't realize you can change the default ringtone and assign a custom tune for your listed contacts. It's a handy feature when separating urgent work calls from personal ones. But that involves learning how to experiment with new ringtones while replacing the selected default. This short guide teaches you how to change your ringtone or load any custom tune from your phone's file manager.

Assigning custom ringtones to specific contacts can help you differentiate important callers from irrelevant ones. It's helpful when you are on a busy commute route and want to guess the caller based on ringtone.

So far, we've talked about changing the ringtone for your regular calls over the carrier network. With the soaring popularity of third-party IM (instant messaging) apps, many prefer WhatsApp, Messenger, and Google Meet to stay in touch with friends and family. Here's how to change the ringtone for your incoming WhatsApp calls on Android. e24fc04721
