TAWUR KESANGA: FOR THE BALANCE OF THE UNIVERSE
Tawur Kesanga is a sacred ceremony which is held annually as part of the celebration of Nyepi; Bali’s ‘Day of Silence’. Tawur Kesanga is a great complex of offerings in which tawur means ‘to pay or restore’. Everything that we take from nature is restored through the Tawur ritual, dedicated to the invisible buta.
The purpose of this sacred ceremony is to scare away and confuse the bad spirits and the negative forces of the underworld that are in intrinsic element in Balinese Hinduism. The ceremony is carried out by local communities at the crossroad of their village one day before Nyepi. It is about purification for the harmony amongst humankind, nature and peace for the universe as the whole.

NYEPI: THE DAY OF SILENCE
Nyepi is a "Day of Silence" which marks the Hindu New Year, according to the ancient Saka calendar. This year Nyepi falls on Thursday, 19th March 2026. On Nyepi Day, all lights and sounds are turned off and no one is permitted to leave their home.
For the Hindus, Nyepi day is a day spent in total silence, meditation, fasting and introspection, reflecting on the past year's events. Hindus believe the laws of Nyepi: Catur Brata Penyepian (four ascetic practices):
AMATI GENI: no fire, no light, which is both literal and symbolic of mental and physical obstacles.
AMATI KARYA: no activities, a precondition to meditation.
AMATI LELUNGAAN: no going out of the house or compound.
AMATI LELANGUAN: no entertainment.
