Nyepi is a sacred and important Hindu religious “Day of Silence” on every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar. The day also marks the new year as a celebration. This year, Nyepi falls on Wednesday, the 23rd of March. For the celebrating in the island of Bali and elsewhere, Nyepi is a day to turn off all lights and sounds, stop all traffic, desert all worldly activities, and meditate for the day. For the rest, it is a national holiday in the middle of the week on a wednesday. For some, the holiday even extends to Thursday. That’s just what everyone needs, right? A two-day holiday to be away from all your target-pursuit at work.

According to an article from Harvard Business Review, writers Marcello Russo and Ioana Lupu explained why young professionals today should always prioritize rest over work, and argued that rest is crucial for young professionals' career success, health, and happiness.  The authors cited studies and research showing that rest and recovery time are essential for productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. Young professionals often fall into a trap of working long hours to prove themselves, leading to burnout, which can negatively affect their career in the long term. The author encourages young professionals to focus on creating a work-life balance that includes ample rest and relaxation, even if it means saying no to additional work or opportunities.

How can we prioritize rest?

Reflect on yourself so you can gain more self-awareness towards your well-being and your work-life balance

Be mindful of your time and how you spend it, it’s limited!

Leisure time should fully be used to recharge your energy and make room for new ideas and creative thoughts.

If you have no other choice, and you realize that your workplace has affected your well-being, then take some time off.

The article concludes that prioritizing rest and your well-being can lead to better career outcomes, improved mental and physical health, and a more fulfilling life.

As young professionals such as yourself receive this mid-week holiday from Nyepi, let’s take a moment and rest. Prioritize your well-being and take the time off to focus on rest and relaxation. Hopefully, you’ll be fully recharged to be more productive and more mindful of your work-life balance.
