Joel Kim is a first year student at the University of British Columbia for music performance on trombone. Joel has studied music from a young age, starting on the violin and switching to the trombone for his grade 7 band class back in 2016 - 2017. Throughout his musical career on trombone, Joel has performed with multiple ensembles such as being the principle trombonist in the Surrey Youth and Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Joel performs with multiple ensembles such as the University of British Columbia Symphone Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the Vancouver Pops Orchestra.
As well as performing, Joel also conducts, composes and arranges music for different ensembles such as the Vancouver Pops Orchestra and his chamber groups at UBC. Joel has self taught himself on how to compose and arrange music for orchestras and small ensembles. He has learnt to conduct ensembles from his high school music teacher, Colleen Sheridan. And with her guidance Joel has conducted ensembles at the Surrey District Festival, his school home concerts, and the Vancouver Pops Orchestra for the "Melodies from Undertale" he arranged.
Joel has currently arranged a handful of pieces for the upcoming Vancouver Pops Orchestra and is continuing to work on future pieces for future concerts. He looks forward to continuing performing and writing music for all sorts of ensembles.
