Rev. Karen Stokes
Rev. Karen Haygood Stokes, Interim Pastor
Pastor Karen came to Grand Rapids from her native California in 2010. Since her arrival, she has served as Interim Pastor at several United Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. She enjoys the ministry of working with congregations as they move through the time of transition between permanent pastors, exploring their past and discerning their future together.
Preaching sermons that are Biblically based and relevant to life in today’s world is one of the primary skills Rev. Stokes brings to her ministry. An accomplished musician, she also enjoys working with our Music Director to bring a wide variety of music to the worship experience. She enjoys Comstock Park UCC’s informality, and weaves humor and a sense of joy in God’s presence into all she does.
In her free time, Karen loves kayaking, dogs, books, movies and her granddaughter Molly. She is a volunteer docent at the Meyer May House, a beautifully-restored Frank Lloyd Wright home in the Heritage Hill district of Grand Rapids. She sang with the Grammy-winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus for ten years, and her writings have been published in the Bible commentary Feasting on the Word and the collection Birthing the Sermon: Women Preachers on the Creative Process.
