 Computer Monitors - An Important Part of Your IT Set-Up

For most people, a computer monitor is just “the screen.” It’s the thing you stare at while you work, browse, game, edit, design, or procrastinate. 60Hz has been dominant for a long time as it does what most people need.
120-165Hz screens are good for immersive gaming and high-end productivity whereas competitive gamers need something higher like 240Hz
High refresh rates are not only for gamers; it gives a better experience for nearly all use-cases. This includes scrolling documents, or working with programs that may be visually intensive, like with graphics editors or video editing software. 

Color Accuracy
Monitors can vary greatly on the quality of the colour they render to their user. Wide colour ranges can make images look more vibrant, and t is hugely important for people who work with graphics editors and video editing software. 

Ergonomics
Ergonomics and eye health is very important. For the information driven world we live in a lot of people spend their entire days, from morning to evening, at a computer screen. For this reason a computer monitor must be easy on the eye. Many organizations see the physical health and safety of their employees as a priority.
The ergonomics factors of a computer screen include and adjustable height and tilt to make it easy to view, proper viewing distance to avoid eye strain, flicker-free backlight and brightness levels.

To avoid neck-extension or slouching the screen should be in the right position; if it’s too high there will be neck-extension, if it’s too low there’ll be slouching.
The ideal distance should be 50-75 cm with your neck and shoulders relaxed and the elbows at roughly 90 degrees.
To avoid eye-strain the brightness should be set to match the room brightness. If it’s too bright there will be eye fatigues, if it’s too dim there will be squinting.

The future of computer monitors is something that is very interesting to consider as there are developments in technology happening all the time; some from the big dominant companies and some from a lot of tech start-ups all around the world.

Display Technology
The display technology is the type of the display of the monitor; how screens actually render their image. It’s about how screens actually create the image – How Light, Colour and contrast are rendered.
The display technology of a screen must do a number of things. It has to create light, control that light per pixel, produce accurate colour, refresh its image in a smooth fashion and do all of this efficiently for human eyes.
Most monitors today are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display); they have a backlight that shines a white light, then there are a layer of crystals that twist or block to let only certain light frequencies through. The LCD pixels don’t actually produce light themselves they just control the light that gets through
OLED screens have pixels that actually emit their own light as each pixel is an individual light emitting diode. They give the advantage of infinite contrast and instant response times.

Resolution & Pixel Density
General development in this has slowed after the release of 4K monitors. This is not because they technology development is stalling, it is because human perception cannot really see anything finer.
However, there will be a number of developments going regarding resolution. The focus will be on the quality of the resolution not just the number of pixels itself.

A high frame rate is especially appreciated by hard-core gamers who like an immersive experience. However, it’s not just gamers who need a high refresh rate. Touch and pen input is not a new technology, but in the future this kind of functionality will be more sensitive and will have better feedback
There will also be gesture recognition where cameras and depth sensors built into technology will be able to interpret gesture to interact with the system
There will also be AI and voice assistants. Right now the IT world is really just scratching the surface with the potential of Artificial Intelligence. Monitors may begin to integrate AI assistants that understand input from the user.

 The future of computer monitors will move beyond simple resolution and refresh rate upgrades, evolving into intelligent, adaptive, and immersive displays that prioritize human perception, health, and workflow. Self-emissive technologies like OLED and micro-LED, combined with AI-driven brightness, color, and layout optimization, will transform monitors from passive screens into interactive, context-aware platforms that seamlessly integrate with AR, spatial computing, and collaborative environments. In short, monitors will no longer just show content—they will shape how we see, interact with, and manage digital reality.
