Joy Buolamwini was born in 1989 (date and month were not found) and she is 33 years old. According to kids.kiddle.co, at 9 years old, she was inspired by the MIT robot, Kismet, and she started studying computer science because of it. She went to Cordova High School and studied Georgia Institute of Technology. One of her main contributions is finding out about bias in AI. For example, media.mit.edu states, "Her MIT thesis methodology uncovered large racial and gender bias in AI services from companies like Microsoft, IBM, and Amazon. Her research has been covered in over 40 countries, and as a renowned international speaker she has championed the need for algorithmic justice at the World Economic Forum and the United Nations." She found this out because algorithms in facial recognition weren't picking up her facial changes. media.mit.edu continues to say, "Joy Buolamwini was working with facial analysis software when she noticed a problem: the software didn't detect her face—because the people who coded the algorithm hadn't taught it to identify a broad range of skin tones and facial structures. Now she's on a mission to fight bias in machine learning, a phenomenon she calls the 'coded gaze.' It's an eye-opening talk about the need for accountability in coding...as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our lives." She is trying to bring equality to places we didn't even know were uneven. Some minor achievements according to science.house.gov are "Masters in Media Arts and Sciences, 2017, Massachusetts Institute of Technology MSc Education (Learning & Technology), 2014, Distinction, University of Oxford BS Computer Science, 2012, Highest Honors, Georgia Institute of Technology." Buolamwini is battling algorithm bias to this day.
