Compression + Computation 2022
Overview
Many modern applications produce massive datasets containing a lot of redundancy, either in the form of highly skewed frequencies or repeating motifs/fragments of identical data. Prominent examples of such datasets arise from genomic databases where in many cases the DNA sequences of two individuals of the same species are highly conserved. On the other hand, it is predicted by 2025, billions of people will have their genome sequenced creating a deluge of sequencing data that may require new genomic compression algorithms to address data storage problems. Computing directly over compressed data opens up the possibility of speeding up the computation over such data by first explicitly locating the redundant elements (using lossless data compression) and then performing the computation directly over the compressed representation. Computation over compressed data may become a necessity with the evolution of data-intensive computing.
Recent years have seen a lot of activities on new data compression techniques, and computation over compressed data. However, there has been little cross-community interaction between theoreticians and those working with real data. Computation+Compression workshop, 2022 aims to bridge the gap by bringing together the experts from Theoretical Computer Science, and Bioinformatics community that work in this area.
The workshop is scheduled as a single-day event, entirely online, featuring talks from researchers in different fields related to data compression, bioinformatics, and a discussion panel. The workshop will be held on January 19, 2022, from 10 am to 6 pm EST (UTC-5h). To join follow our registration link. Registration is free of charge but required in order to participate.
