We are delighted to partner with Compass, as so many of our colleagues have done. The education and training Compass provides to our school and to the counselor community is invaluable. Their excellent research de-stresses rather than raise alarms.

After completing the Compass Education program, students interested in enrolling in higher education opportunities can participate in our Compass Education Learning Academies. This pathway provides a structured, supported transition to and through the Food Service Academy.

The Compass Education Center program is designed to help students successfully complete requirements necessary to graduate high school, advance to post secondary education or vocational certification, and skills training. Our four cornerstones include: caring, compassion, conviction, and courage.

Compass continuing education (CE) contact hours are generally accepted by most professional nursing and social work organizations and state board of nursing and social work. ACMA has made substantial efforts to obtain appropriate providerships for CE offerings and many licensing authorities allow for some form of CE reciprocity. However, ACMA does not warrant that all professional organizations or licensing authorities will accept its CE contact hours. If in doubt, individuals are advised to contact their professional licensing organizations or licensing authorities to confirm acceptance of these contact hours. Click here to learn more.

The innovation was originally developed for corporate and government implementation. In 2010 a group of educators received permission to adapt the tools for educational use. They recognised the importance of integrating systems thinking habits and practices in schools if we hoped to truly prepare students for the future, accomplish systemic change and contribute to a more sustainable world.

The Sustainability Compass is a systems thinking tool that supports educators with the integration of holistic sustainability into their curriculum rather than a knowledge set or data-backed curriculum. The Sustainability Compass uses four Compass Points (NESW) - Nature, Society, Economy, and Wellbeing- to identify systems elements and map their interconnections to support students to visualise complexity and identify leverage points for change.

In the classroom, the practice of systems thinking fosters vital social-emotional competencies such as self-awareness, relationships with others, and connectedness to the broader world. As learners recognize their innate interdependence with their communities, they are increasingly motivated to act to sustain them. The Sustainability Compass integrates easily into existing K-12 curricula and is already being used by thousands of educators around the globe. The Sustainability Compass is a copyrighted tool, free to use in nonprofit education.

Compass Education is a movement of committed volunteer educators dedicated to building a better world through teaching skills for systems thinking and sustainability in schools. The movement has spread to 96 countries, 200+ schools and boasts 2800+ trained educators. In the last two years, Compass Education has worked to create the organisational structure and digital platform to support the rapid dissemination of systems tools in K-12 education and in multiple contexts.

Today, Compass Education is positioned to grow exponentially and in the next 2-3 years we hope to accomplish scale through partnerships and foundation funding that allows us to make available our learning resources in multiple languages and provide training in socio-economic-cultural diverse contexts.

The Compass Education website provides easy access points to begin to use the Sustainability Compass, including a free introductory course as well as hundreds of crowd sourced resources and lesson plans. Educators who would like more formal training of the full suite of systems thinking tools can contact Compass Education through their website or reach out directly to team@compasseducation.org.

Minnesota has a reputation for high-quality public education, placing at or near the top in many national rankings and measure. But our state also has persistent achievement gaps - often rooted in structural racism, such as poverty and housing stability - for its indigenous students and students of color, leaving them unprepared to succeed in the future. We track data on 3rd grade reading scores, 8th grade math scores, and high school graduation to better understand how Minnesota is progressing in closing the achievement gaps and preparing students for future academic and workforce success.

Our philosophy is centered around the belief that schools can achieve better educational outcomes for students by working together as a collective entity. The Compass Trust is founded on the principles of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity, with the aim of providing a supportive and nurturing environment that enables schools to flourish and students to succeed.

After working for few weeks on a literature review about learning and teaching being disconnected, and how student empowerment improves learning, I just wanted to share the highlights. Here they are in a form of a compass:

Secondary education is embedded into real-world problem solving and meaningful work. The innovative and research-based school model was designed by a diverse team of educators, students, parents, artists, and community leaders in an entrepreneurial business incubator, and as such, many local partnerships expand opportunities for student learning. Additionally, several national partners add depth and breadth to the curriculum.

JD: 2019 was a year of tremendous change for Compass. Our market reach grew as we welcomed record volumes of new schools to the Compass community. Our team grew as we invested more in our business. Our software platform grew, as we developed new tools and improved existing ones so schools could continue to simplify complexity with Compass. A particular highlight was the work to improve the events and consent functionality to further streamline the process for schools and reduce the administrative burden. Over the next 12 months, we will continue to grow and invest in our platform with a focus on ways we can help principals and school support staff connect data and make it easier to find insights to inform their decision making and their planning. Moreover, improve the experience for parents and students to be enrich their educational experience.
