Compact Antennas for Sensor Systems

ESoA Course "Compact Antennas for Sensor Systems"

In the framework of the European School of Antennas, we are pleased to inform you that the course "Compact Antennas for Sensor Systems" will take place in an online format from UPC, Barcelona, from May 31st to June 4th 2021. It is organised by Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). The course is intended for PhD students, engineers and Post Docs with a background in Electromagnetics.

Wireless small antenna systems for pervasive sensing are becoming a critical part of the growing world of the IoT for applications ranging from smart city, urban mobility, new industry or medical care. The course will cover from the modeling and design principles of compact antennas to the fabrication technologies for communications and sensing applications. It includes the theoretical background, design principles, implementation aspects and measurement methods. As a special case the principles of the fractal geometries and its application to the design of miniaturized and self-complementary antennas and devices will be presented. Specific properties and constraints for the multi-element and reconfigurable antennas will be addressed. Small antenna measurement techniques will be reviewed and the particular problems linked to terminal antenna measurement will be discussed. The theory of characteristic modes and its applications to antenna design will also be presented. Finally, a presentation from Ignion (worldwide leading compact antenna design) will address some of the state of the art industry products and requirements.

The participants will design antennas, with different analytical and software tools and assess their directivity, efficiency, and diversity performance with both experimental and computational methods. For the design of the embedded sensors, the basics of the wireless propagation in dispersive and lossy media will be covered and practical parameters will be discussed. Some prototypes will be designed, implemented and measured.

The course fee is 250€ for academic institutions and 440€ for non-academic institutions. Course fee reimbursements will be offered for up to 4 students based on their special course progress and personal needs. The number of participants is limited to 20, so please register as soon as possible.

To register for the course, please fill the attached form and send it back to Giselle Gonzalez (esoacourses.bcn@tsc.upc.edu) before May 25th.
