Karen L. Joyner has been the Chief Executive Officer at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank since April 1, 2013. Prior to that, she was the Chief Financial Officer at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk for nine years (2004 to 2013) and was on the Board of Directors of that foodbank from 2001 to 2004. Before making the leap into the non-profit world, Karen worked at Dollar Tree for sixteen years (1988 to 2004) in various Finance positions and was the Vice President, Controller before she left (when the national chain had only 3,300 retail stores; it now has almost 16,000).
Karen is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. She was in public accounting at the KPMG firm for several years upon graduating and passing her CPA exam. In December 2006, Karen was selected for a “Women In Business” achievement award by Inside Business. She was also named a “Super CPA” in Virginia Business magazine in the Nonprofit category in 2006, 2007, and 2009 and was named the “CFO of the Year” for small non-profits by the magazine in June 2008. In 2019 and 2020, Karen was included in the Inside Business “Power List” of “the leaders helping to shape the future of Hampton Roads”. Besides her work locally, Karen has been active on several committees of Feeding America, the network of foodbanks around the country with headquarters in Chicago. Karen is active in her church as a Kindergarten Sunday School teacher. She lives in Northern Suffolk with her husband of 35 years.
Karen is a 2017 graduate of the CIVIC Leadership Institute.
