Schererville was originally called Tremont when it was founded in 1836 by Henry Scherer who purchased land from Potawatomi Indians when they were forced out by white settlers after an agreement with President Andrew Jackson known as The Treaty of Tippecanoe.
The name changed from Tremont to Schererville around 1854 after Jacob Hildebrandt purchased land next to his brother-in-law's farmhouse (who happened to be named Henry). He named this new area "Hildebrandt's Grove" which eventually became known as Hildebrandt Park today where many residents enjoy playing sports such as baseball diamonds during springtime weather conditions!
