This dwelling is a former family-run pensao of 15 rooms with an enchanting history. We are in the process of bringing it back from around 10 years of standing empty, and are using many of the hotel's original features and furniture - recycling, repurposing and remixing what we can to create a unique space, as well as reduce our impact on the environment and be respectful to the natural, Portuguese way of life.

With front and rear access, plus rear stairs to the first floor, this building could be split into three, possibly four, separate dwellings.

'26' is a unique and unusual building that has (nearly) always been conspicuous by the 'Pinheiro Manso' tree that dominates this historically rich corner of Curia. The front garden's pink path leads to the Pensao's grand double-doorway, and through to a generous reception. The first former guest room is found on entry as are the wide stairs to the first floor. The grand hallway, now a 'hall of mirrors', leads to three generous former bedrooms - now a small lounge and two family rooms. Beyond is the kitchen and dining room, which would have served countless guests, along with a further double-aspected room, and rear doors to a courtyard garden.

The first floor boasts SEVEN former guest rooms that now include a studio, study and workshop. An upstairs former lounge can also be found that is light-filled and peaceful, along with a large bathroom and rear stairs to the tangerine tree balcony.

Our approach

A further SIX bedrooms can be found in the Pensao's attic/second floor - all wood-panelled and rich in character. This floor offers pleasing views of Curia and the distant countryside, and you'll find an antique bathroom here too that conjures up a bygone age, and retains the building's epochal charm.

Grand entrance

The rear courtyard is a peaceful haven, blessed by afternoon and evening sun, and is home to the family's chickens now. A bountiful tangerine tree offers seemingly endless fruit as does its neighbouring plum tree. There's a former aviary that now acts as a potting shed and store with lighting for pleasant and relaxed evenings.
