"The Harder They Come" is a reggae song by the Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff. It was first recorded for the soundtrack of the 1972 movie of the same name, in which it is supposed to have been written by the film's main character, Ivanhoe Martin.

In 1969, singer Jimmy Cliff met film director Perry Henzell, who was intending to make a film about a musician who turned to crime. Cliff agreed to take the lead role, and the film was shot over the next two years. During filming, Cliff came up with the line "the harder they come". Henzell thought it would make a good title for the film, and asked Cliff to write and record a theme song for it.[2]

"The Harder They Come" was recorded by the group Rockers Revenge in 1983 after their successful cover version of the Eddy Grant song "Walking On Sunshine" the previous year. The single peaked at number 13 in the US Dance Chart and at number 30 in the UK and Irish Singles Chart.

"The Harder They Come" was released as a single by English ska band Madness in November 1992 after a successful reunion concert held at London's Finsbury Park. The single was recorded live at the event along with its B-sides. Although in 1992 Madness had success with reissues of "It Must Be Love" and "My Girl", their version of "The Harder They Come" failed to make the top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 44.[10]

"Come On" is a song written and first released by Chuck Berry in 1961. It has been recorded in many versions by many bands since its release, most notably the Rolling Stones. "Come On" failed to chart in the US Top 100, but the B-side, "Go Go Go", reached number 38 on the UK Singles Chart.

"Come On" was chosen as the Rolling Stones' debut single. Released in June 1963, it reached number 21 on the UK single charts. The B-side was the Stones' arrangement of Willie Dixon's "I Want to Be Loved". Both songs were recorded on May 10, 1963. Other songs recorded on that day were "Love Potion No. 9" (unverified) and "Pretty Thing". "Come On" has been released on several compilation albums: More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) (1972), Singles Collection: The London Years (1989) (together with its B-side), Singles 1963-1965 (2004) (together with its B-side), Rolled Gold+: The Very Best of the Rolling Stones (2007), GRRR! (2012) and Stray Cats, a bonus disc available only on the Rolling Stones In Mono Box Set (together with its B-side).[2]

During the June 6, 2013 concert in Toronto, Canada, as part of the 50 & Counting Tour, Mick Jagger sang a few bars (with Charlie Watts drumming the beat) after mentioning the single being released exactly 50 years ago, the day after that night.[3] It was the first time the song was heard in any capacity during a Rolling Stones concert since 1965.[1]

Even So Come by Chris Tomlin reminds us that Jesus Christ will return soon, this time as the Bridegroom. We, the Church are His bride. Our job is to be ready, preparing ourselves for His return by evangelizing and sharing the Gospel message of love with everyone. Just as with an earthly wedding, the bride readies herself. She wants to be as beautiful and prepared as possible for the moment when she will be wedded to her love. As the church, we should be engaged in intense preparation also. We must pursue prayer, evangelism, and service to others. This means there is no time for petty pursuits and division. In unity, we need to prepare for the return of our Lord so that His plan can move towards completion. A church that is ill-prepared and distracted cannot bring glory to God.

When I listen to this song, I am heavily convicted of my own need to seek God more intently and love people more deeply. How often I get tripped up by insignificant things. As a result, I fail to focus on my most important purpose on earth: loving people and letting them know they are loved by God. It is a daily effort to align my priorities to be in sync with the Kingdom of God.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray you would help me focus in on You, not allowing the petty distractions of life to divert my attention away from Your plan. Please show me how to love people like You do. Give me boldness to share the message of Christ crucified so that my friends and loved ones would come to know You. I believe You have placed me exactly where You need to me be to do Your work. Please make me sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and help me be ready to give an answer to all who ask where my hope is found. It is in You alone. In Jesus Name, AMEN.

A friend from out west has started a series of posts on facebook about what different advent and Christmas songs mean; I thought they were well done (all that he does is well done, actually), and asked if I could put them, the discussions, up on my blog. He said I could, so here is his first.

Interesting that this song comes from 9th century Catholic monastic life (Amillennial/replacement theology) but yet seems to reflect a current dispensational view of Israel being still saved as a nation in the future. Any thoughts on this? Catholics do not believe Israel has a national future in Gods program and take the Church as the new Israel. Yet this song reflects a very different view.

Rolling Stone now calls "A Change Is Gonna Come" one of the greatest songs of all time, but in 1964 its political message was a risky maneuver. Cooke had worked hard to be accepted as a crossover artist after building a sizable following on the gospel circuit. And the first thing to know about the song, Cooke biographer Peter Guralnick says, is that it's unlike anything the singer had ever recorded.

"His first success came with the song 'You Send Me.' I mean, this was his first crossover number under his own name, and it went to No. 1 on the pop charts, which was just unheard of," Guralnick says. "As he evolved as a pop singer, he brought more and more of his gospel background into his music, as well as his social awareness, which was keen. But really, 'A Change Is Gonna Come' was a real departure for him, in the sense that it was undoubtedly the first time that he addressed social problems in a direct and explicit way."

It's hard to imagine today what it meant for a black artist to achieve crossover in 1963. It did not come easily, and the last thing Sam Cooke wanted to do was to alienate his new audience. But he also came from the gospel world. He could not ignore moral outrage right in front of him.

Cooke was known to be a bit of a control freak in the studio, with a precise idea of how he wanted every instrument to sound. For this track, however, he gave total latitude to the arranger, Ren Hall. Hall took the charge seriously, and wrote what was essentially a symphonic arrangement within a three-and-a-half-minute framework.

"It was a complex arrangement with something like 17 strings," Guralnick says. "I think part of him felt, 'I'm not gonna do it if I can't to justice to it.' But the other part was that it had this kind of ominousness about it.

"Generation after generation has heard the promise of it. It continues to be a song of enormous impact," he says. "We all feel in some way or another that a change is gonna come, and he found that lyric. It was the kind of hook that he always looked for: The phrase that was both familiar but was striking enough that it would have its own originality. And that makes it almost endlessly adaptable to whatever goal, whatever movement is of the moment."

Cooke was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987. His songwriting catalog contains over 150 songs with more than 50 years after starting his songwriting career, his songs still endure to this day with recordings by major artists such as Amy Winehouse, the Rolling Stones, Jackie Wilson, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, the Neville Brothers, Leela James, Arcade Fire, Nas, Billy Bragg, the Band, Nina Simone, Cat Stevens, Shemekia Copeland, the Animals and Ray Charles among many others.
