The majority of people might not know that contact lenses have been in use for a long time as Leonardo Davinci envisioned the idea in 1508. It’s practical use started back in 1806 and then soft lenses were introduced in the market in 1971.
Ever wonder how these tiny thin pieces of plastic can correct your vision? Well to know that we must be aware of how a human eye works. A human can see an object when a ray of light reflects of the surface of the object and pass through the cornea and pupil and land on the retina at the back of the eye. The retina consists of cones and rods that convert the rays into electrical signals that are then sent o the brain. If there is any problem in the path of the ray of light we feel difficulty in seeing the object. These problems are referred to as refraction errors.
The most common errors are myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Short-sightedness or Myopia:
In short-sightedness or myopia the ray of light lands before the retina instead of landing on the retina. This results in people having trouble seeing objects at a long distance. To solve this problem concave or diverging best coloured contact lenses are used. These contact lenses focus the ray of light from the object on the retina. They increase the focal length of the ray and focus it on the retina to create a clear image.
Long-sightedness or Hyperopia:
In long-sightedness or hyperopia the ray of light land past the retina creating a blurry image of the objects near the person while he can see the distant object properly. To treat hyperopia convex or converging contact lenses are used. These lenses reduce the focal length of the ray from the near object and gather it before it lands on the retina. When these focused rays land on the retina people can easily see a near object.
Astigmatism:
This is a special type of error. This is a combination of both hyperopia and myopia. A person suffering from astigmatism is unable to see an object clearly as the ray of light entering the eye creates multiple focal points on the retina due to damaged cornea. This error is removed by a special type of lens known as a toric lens. This has the capability to correct the damage of the cornea and focus the ray by creating focus potentials in both directions i.e. vertical and horizontal.
Presbyopia:
Persobiya is a universal error of the vision caused in people as a result of aging. To treat this error two kinds of cheap colored contacts are used i.e. bifocal and monovision contact lenses. Bifocal contact lenses consist of both the concave and convex lenses with concave in the center and convex all around the lens. In monovision contact lenses one eye wears a concave lens and the other uses a convex lens.
