Meet the Doctors
Sanjiv K. Patankar MD, FACS, FRCS (Edinburgh)
Dr. Patankar is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. He also has privileges at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ and University Medical Center Princeton in Plainsboro, NJ.
In his early formative years, Dr. Patankar had the distinct fortune of being trained in the techniques and research methodologies by the pioneers in the field of laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the United States in the early 1990s. He presented and published several seminal articles in this field when laparoscopy was regarded as highly controversial in its application for colorectal diseases. These articles paved the way for further peer reviewed studies that firmly established the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive surgery for diseases of the colon and rectum.
In keeping with his motto for embracing significant advances in technology aimed at improving patient outcomes, Dr. Patankar saw the value of robotic-assisted surgery for diseases of the colon and rectum and adopted this technology well before its widespread use. He has amassed a vast experience and is now regarded as a leader in this field. He has travelled throughout the United States educating colorectal surgeons in eminent universities in the use of robotic surgery.
Dr. Patankar is a dedicated educator and holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He now contributes to surgical education by writing invited review articles and book chapters. He also serves on various professional committees, such as the Cancer Committee and the Robotic Surgery Safety Committee.
Dr. Patankar has also received numerous professional accolades. He has been awarded the physician of the year award based upon confidential patient surveys conducted by Press Ganey at St. Peter’s University Hospital. He has also been chosen by his peers and has featured as a Top Doctor in the specialty of Colon and Rectal Surgery in New Jersey Monthly's Top Doctor issue every year since 2012.
