"In Color" is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Jamey Johnson. It was released in March 2008 as the first single from his 2008 album That Lonesome Song. Johnson co-wrote the song with James Otto and Lee Thomas Miller. In January 2009, "In Color" became Johnson's first Top 10 country hit with a peak at number 9.
The song is a largely acoustic ballad centralizing on an elderly man who is showing black-and-white photographs to his grandson, each photograph showing a various part of the man's life. Describing the instances in each photos, such as fighting in World War II, the Great Depression and the day he and his wife first got married, he recalls his own life story to his grandson, telling him that "[he] should have seen it in color" (i.e., that the grandson would have had to have been there himself to understand what each experience was truly like).[1] Trace Adkins was originally slated to record the song, until Johnson asked Adkins' permission to record the song himself.[2] Adkins did record the song as an iTunes exclusive bonus track on his 2008 album, X.[3] This story concept parallels the 2006 Carbon Leaf song "The War Was in Color".

A music video was shot for "In Color" in May 2008. It portrays Johnson sitting on a stool, playing acoustic guitar and singing, with various black-and-white photographs (which Johnson borrowed from his grandmother) spread out on the floor around him.[2] Eventually, color begins to sweep across the photos from the outside, working its way in until Johnson himself is also in color.
"In Color" debuted at number 57 on the Hot Country Songs chart dated April 19, 2008. The song spent a total of 40 weeks as an active single on the country charts, and became the first Top 10 hit of Johnson's career, peaking at number 9 on the week of January 10, 2009.[4] As of 2023, it remains Johnson's only Top 10 country single. In addition, the song peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same week. The song was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on June 9, 2010.[5] It has sold 1,340,000 copies in the United States as of February 2016.[6]
"In Color" won "Song of the Year" at the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 5, 2009. It was also nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song at the 51st Grammy Awards.[7]

She fills in her sentences with phrasing that allows us to SEE the colors that her character hears and read through our eyes not only the words on the page, but watch a canvas before us.

It is the second bonus track on the album and it appears as the fourrteenth track on the 2013 deluxe edition and fifteenth of the 2014 re-release.It serves as the eleventh track on the 2013 standard edition. It was written by Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle.
A video explaining the story behind Life In Color was posted on OneRepublicVEVO's YouTube channel on March 25, 2013. In the video Ryan Tedder explains how Life In Color wasn't originally written for Native, but it was actually written over two years prior to the album. The band performed it live during the two years before the album's release, and the fan reception was extremely positive. The band feel like the song is fun to do and that it fits in with the rest of the 'up beat' album.
The song's co-writer, Lee Thomas Miller, brought up the photos in a conversation with Jamey Johnson. A lightbulb immediately went off for both songwriters, and once they finally got in a room together (along with James Otto), a modern country classic was born.
We had a long conversation about how normal people were sent away to war. My grandfather was a tobacco farmer in Kentucky, and he was drafted. He went in as a Private and came out as a Private. He literally went and saved the world and went back to the tobacco farm. That was the beautiful thing about those who serve. They are just normal people. There was a lot of that conversation. As you do (though), it ultimately needs to be about the girl.
...Things have happened since then that are special to me. Five or six years ago, well after the song (was released,) we went to the WWII Museum in New Orleans, which is probably the best collection of WWII memorabilia. That made that part of the song that much more real to me. I always say that it won awards and did all those things. That song changed my life and my career. Every now and then, people will tell me that their grandfather put it in his will to have that song played at his funeral.
