Artist-quality colored pencils are typically light-resistant or lightfast, to a degree. They're not as lightfast as oil paints, for example, and lightfastness varies by brand. They can also be sharpened to a fine point to allow for exquisite detail. My favorite brand of colored pencils, which I used to create most of the drawings you see on this page, are Prismacolor Colored Pencils (this links to Blick Art Materials, and if you make a purchase I get a small commission that helps support this site).

Prismacolors come in a range of 150 colors... more than enough to draw just about anything! But this is where it gets even better - the colors can be easily blended together in endless combinations to create even more shades, tints and hues. You can basically draw anything with colored pencils that you would be able to depict with paint. Colored pencil art can easily rival paintings in luminosity and depth of color!

As you can see from my colored pencil art on this page, colored pencils can be used to create artwork in a variety of styles, such as photorealism, abstraction, whimsical, and composite (combination of styles).

Often, when making color pencil drawings, both paper color and paper texture are vital elements in its creation as well as its reproduction. If you intend to include the paper surface in the reproduction, appropriate lighting is required so that texture is neither lost or overpowering. This makes photography, rather than scanning a preferred option.

So to start with, whether you photograph or scan the drawing, keep it in RGB as long as you can. Do any color corrections that are needed in the RGB color space. It will help you out immensely if you calibrate your monitor first.

The Shanghai-born and -based artist Cui Jie has developed a distinctive formal language through her wildly imaginative drawings and paintings depicting retrofuturist and fragmented cityscapes. Her architectural inventions draw on avant-garde design movements like the Bauhaus and Japanese Metabolism, as well as styles borrowed from Chinese and Soviet propaganda. The resulting images, even when based on specific existing buildings, have an unmistakably dystopian aura.

In visual art everything is possible, in MPO. What it really counts is the final product and not the process how the work was done.

I have three examples of works done using colored pencils, pastel pencils, and oil, in that order.

At the end all is semantics. Have a nice weekend.

I think of sketches or drawings as relying mostly on value contrasts. I posted the following 2 as drawings done with acrylics and a brush. What Moises has done are paintings as they also employ color and chroma contrasts. Of course, I am usually wrong about most things;) Gary

This is an article that appeared on the Artist Network:

The definitions of drawing and painting have evolved over the years. Most working artists today associate the act of drawing to mark/line making with a dry media like charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, chalk or pastel and the act of painting to shape configurations that consist of value and color applied wet with paint on a brush. It is easy to see how these two can overlap in definition. An artist can easily use colored lead pencils to create a piece of artwork that represents a realistic portrayal of shapes, values, and colors and another artist can easily utilize a brush filled with paint to make definite marks and lines. Some have drawn the line, no pun intended, between a pastel drawing and painting by the amount of paper or flat surface allowed to show. If the tone of the paper/surface plays a major visual role in the final appearance of the artwork, it is a drawing. If the paper/surface is completely covered with pastel, it is considered a painting. These differentiations can become even harder to make when pastel is made wet, a process often employed at the beginning stages to set an underpainting or tone to the paper/surface.

The river rock turned out to be quite fun to do. I used a white pencil to blend and burnish the colors which gave the rocks a smooth, yet mottled appearance. The stripy stone at the bottom was a nice challenge of textures and I keep tit rough looking by not doing any blending, just adding stippled layers of color. The final part worked was the big stepping stone which was also simply stippled and left unblended.

The creation of this colored pencil portrait drawing is a multi step process. It involves a slow process of layering color to build up the contrast. I draw with oil-based polychromos colored pencils to make water-resistant art. I apply 2 coats of varnish to seal the surface.

There are thousands of photo editing tutorials on similar edits online. Filters and curves are probably the best bet. However depending on the image using the selection brush which is under the magic wand may be used to create a new pixel based creation. This is done by using the areas of color in the scanned image as a template to color fill to match the general feel of the drawing.

I love your art-journally side, Pivi and the way you can combine whimsical, geometric designs into large scenes full of color and imagination! These new pages are fascinating. Your pencil work looks like a luminous painting!

I am a UK artist who specializes in drawing custom dog portraits in coloured pencil. I have drawn portraits of dogs of many breeds, ages and colours including portraits of show dogs and pedigrees. My gallery shows some of the commissions that I have completed.

On meeting this young bulldog I couldn't resist taking his photo. After starting the drawing, in graphite pencil, for my own pleasure, I showed it to the owner's wife. She clamoured to purchase it when it was complete, as a birthday gift for her husband. They were both delighted with the finished result.

Featuring around 150 works from public and private collections across the world, as well as from the David Hockney Foundation and the artist, the exhibition will trace the trajectory of his practice by revisiting these five subjects over a period of five decades. Highlights include a series of new portraits; coloured pencil drawings created in Paris in the early 1970s; composite Polaroid portraits from the 1980s; and a selection of drawings from an intense period of self-scrutiny during the 1980s when the artist created a self-portrait every day over a period of two months.

Colored pencils are a great medium to use in your Art Portfolio. With colored pencils, you can draw with precision, detail, and depth, and you can layer the colors to achieve an effect similar to an oil painting,

We begin our Color Pencil Drawing course by demonstrating two main techniques used for colored pencil, overlaying and burnishing. Layering is often used in the beginning stages of the color pencil drawing process. With this technique, tones are gradually built up using several layers of different colors and it appears to have a grainy and fuzzy texture on the paper.

Burnishing is a blending technique that often follows the color layering that has been done. Artists use a colorless blender or a light colored pencil for this technique, where you apply them firmly onto the layered colors. This will make colors blend and pressed deep into the grain of the paper, providing a shiny, wax coated texture to the drawing.

Color pencil drawing has a unique process unlike other painting and drawing projects. While the detail process is usually the last step for other mediums, the detail process in color pencil starts very early on as you start to fill in the areas.

Colored pencils have a core of colored pigment and a protective casing made of wood. While standard pencils have a core of graphite and clay, the core of most colored pencils is made of wax, pigments, additives, and binding agents. Other colored pencils are oil-based, water-soluble, and some are even mechanical.

The first method is used to blend colors. Watercolor pencils (or water-soluble pencils) can behave as watercolors if treated with damp brushes. They can also be used dry and then work as standard colored pencils.

If used by themselves, colored pencils are used in two techniques - layering and burnishing. Layering is a technique usually used at the beginning of the drawing. Its idea is to use primary colors in layers and, with that, to get different tones. Burnishing is done on layers using a colorless blender or a light-colored pencil. The result is a shiny surface of blended colors.

Anne, our newest artist, started at Artworks in the summer of 2017. Always full of smiles and kind words, Anne brightens up the studio with her colorful, richly-detailed landscape drawings and vivid imagination. Her favorite mediums are colored pencil and oil paint sticks, or as she says, any material that is messy and fun. She is a very efficient worker, and though her preferred subjects are landscapes, people, and houses, she is open to new art experiences. Anne took art classes in high school and enjoys scrapbooking at home. Her current artistic goals are learning how to collage and creating monotypes with oil sticks on glass. In her spare time, this prolific, cat-loving artist enjoys watching movies and TV, going to the movies, and reading mystery novels. 9af72c28ce
