Dorm life looks easy… until you’re living in it. These are the dorm mistakes most freshmen wish they knew before move-in. Save this now so you don’t have to learn everything the hard way.
1. Not checking bed height before buying storage
Under-bed bins not fitting = biggest freshman tragedy.
2. Using a tiny trashcan
It fills up in a day, save yourself from daily trash trips with a bigger trashcan.
3. Letting the dorm become the hangout spot accidentally
It’s fun… until it’s always your room.
4. Assuming no one will touch your laundry
Dorm machines are shared and people won’t wait. If your cycle ends and you’re not there, your clothes will get moved.
5. Letting your desk become a dumping ground
Clutter kills motivation. Set a weekly reset.
6. Not setting up a bedside “landing zone”
Phone, water, lip balm — otherwise it all ends up on the floor.
7. Skipping blackout curtains (if allowed)
Dorm blinds leak light like crazy.
8. Not talking about room rules with your roommate
Guests, noise, cleaning — set expectations early.
9. Bringing way too much clothes (or makeup)
Dorm storage is limited, you don't want your room to feel cluttered.
10. Forgetting command hooks/strips
You’ll need more than you think.
11. Keeping shoes on the floor by the door
That area will become gross. Do yourself a favor and use a rack or bin.
12. Skipping a mattress topper
Dorm beds are uncomfortable. This is the #1 comfort upgrade.
13. No surge protector or extension cord
Dorm outlets are limited and usually not where you need them.
14. Ignoring airflow
Dorms get stuffy. Fan & air purifier are essential.
15. Forgetting cleaning supplies
At a minimum: Clorox wipes, mini vacuum, paper towels.
16. Not bringing a shower caddy + flip flops
Community bathrooms… no explanation needed.
17. Not bringing a real lamp
Dorm lights are bright and not great for winding down or studying late.
18. Assuming your roommate’s sleep schedule will match yours
Light, alarms, FaceTime calls — discuss this early.
19. Not having a small “grab-and-go” bag
It makes quick trips out of your room more convenient.
20. Forgetting stain remover
When you need it, you NEED it! Tide pens are a quick and easy solution.
21. Not bringing a long charging cord (6–10 ft)
Avoid the everyday hassle, bring a long charger.
22. Not having a mobile makeup bag or bin
You’ll get ready in your friend’s room A LOT.
23. Not talking to your RA
It's nice to have a good relationship with your RA. Plus they usually have great advice.
24. Not having a laundry plan
Dorm halls are big and have limited machines. Going Sunday night = rookie mistake.
25. Not having a mini tool kit
Scissors, screwdriver, tape measure — lifesavers.
You don’t have to get dorm life perfect on day one. Everyone adjusts differently — this guide just helps you skip a few avoidable headaches. Save it, come back to it, and pass it along to a friend who’s moving in next.
