The arena, designed for functional flexibility, features aesthetic and technical excellence for both patrons and performers. The physical configuration evolved by combining the requirements of two diverse seating layouts; one for theatrical stage seating, and the other for coliseum-in-the-round seating.

Now in its 57th season of hosting Pirate basketball, the coliseum is connected to the second level of the Murphy Center by an indoor walkway. The floor inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum received a fresh look prior to the 2019-20 season with new designs and logos, while a new video boards and scoreboards were installed in previous years.
