Somehow, by 1950, the Soviet Union had acquired the technology. Russians tested a bomb in Siberia in 1950. Americans had reason to suspect that the technology was obtained through spies.
Julius Rosenberg was an American Communist who, as a military employee, had access to secrets pertaining to the Manhattan Project (the Atomic Bomb).
When his connections to Communism were discovered, he was terminated from his job. In response, Rosenberg handed over military secrets to Russian spies.
He and his wife, Ethel (also a Communist), were tried for espionage.
