Beginning in 1912, the Central American nation of Nicaragua was ruled by the Somoza family, This regime was corrupt and dictatorial. In 1979, the Sandinistas. led by a Marxist named Daniel Ortega, overthrew the Somoza regime.
When President Reagan was elected in 1980, one of his priorities was to assist the "contras" in Nicaragua who were determined to depose the Sandinistas.
Unfortunately for President Reagan, the Congress passed the "Boland" law which prohibited the President from interfering in any way, in order to avoid another Vietnam-style conflict.
But Reagan was determined to support the contras.
