In 1979 on the small island of Grenada, not far from South America, a Marxist leader named Maurice Bishop came to power. Bishop was a disciple of Fidel Castro. He secured many progressive reforms for the Island, but he did not allow for political differences.
1,000 American citizens lived on the island, most who were enrolled at St. George's Medical School in Grenada.
In 1983, one of Bishop's officers orchestrated a coup. The coup was led by Bernard Coard, a more radical Communist. He executed Bishop. The island descended rapidly into a Communist dictatorship.
