👏 Introduction

I have examined how task difficulty influences interhemispheric interactions during visual word recognition. In a lexical decision task, difficulty is primarily determined by the properties of the nonword stimuli, since participants must decide whether each stimulus is a real word or not. I hypothesized that interhemispheric interactions would vary depending on the type of nonword used (e.g., pseudowords versus nonwords). Given the right hemisphere’s bias toward visual-perceptual processing and the left hemisphere’s specialization for lexical processing, I expected that coordination between the two hemispheres would show different patterns as a function of nonword type.
