The Archon War is a series of brutal conflicts between gods that occurred in Teyvat a few thousand years ago. In these times, human life was fragile and easily destroyed as gods waged war on one another, millions died throughout the entire span of the wars. The end of the war signified the ushering of a new era, the establishment of The Seven.
It is a mystery as to when the war truly started, but the catalyst for the war beginning was the opening of seven divine seats in Celestia, these seats were meant for gods who could become the guides for the greater masses of humanity.
Not all gods fought for the same reasons though. Some fought to defend their settlements and worshippers, while others chose not to fight at all and focus on protecting the people in their care.

Most gods whose fate didn’t result in dying or being sealed away fled to the Dark Sea. It is said that discontent with the new order of The Seven led to them fleeing, but over time they became “evil gods”. It is unknown as to why they changed over time in the Dark Sea.
While the turmoil caused by the Archon War is but another piece of history to the current civilization in Teyvat, remnants from that era still exist in the form of the last two members of the original seven. Barbatos, the God of Freedom (Venti) and Morax, the God of Contracts (Zhongli), are all that’s left of the original seven victors, all the others having seemingly perished by now.
Important Note:
The term “Archon” and “God” are used to differentiate between regular gods and those who are recognized by Celestia. The term “Archon” itself is a Greek word that means “ruler”, the meaning fits, don’t you think?
