About Mr. heinrichs

As you already know, my name is Mr. Heinrichs and I am a teacher at Summit Middle School. I have been teaching in Coquitlam for 20 years and have experience at the middle and elementary levels as well as teaching information technology. I come from a family of teachers. My father also taught in Coquitlam. My wife Erin teaches in at River View Park Elementary. Both of her parents were also educators. I love teaching. I feel so blessed to be able to work with students and do the job I love. I am passionate about helping students understand big ideas. I also believe that students need to be able to collaborate with others while becoming strong, independent workers and thinkers. We are going to work hard on these things this year.

If you have been to my classroom you will know that there are a few things that I am passionate about, other than teaching. The first is my family. Erin and I have three sons and one daughter. Their names are James, Ben, Sam and Maggie. I just love being a dad. My children are a constant source of amazement and joy for me. Becoming a dad has changed my life in numerous ways and hopefully has made me a better teacher. James is 11 and entering his first year in middle school at Maple Creek. Ben is 8 and in grade 3. Ben loves to be funny, be creative (especially with is Lego creations) and draw. Sam is 6 and in grade 1. He loves playing soccer, digging in the dirt and riding his bike. Maggie is two and keeps us on our toes.

The other things I am passionate about are music, photography and the Vancouver Whitecaps. You just might get the sense that I am a Whitecaps fan when you enter my room.

This year I am teaching Coding and Design. We are going to build things! I love hands on learning. I think kids love to build things and figure out how they work. We are going to make things that can be coded, and learn how to code them. This will start you on the road to understanding how so many of the devices that you use every day are built and programmed.

Parents, this site is not just for your children. Please check it frequently to stay up to date with what we are doing and to see examples of what we do in class. As well, you need to know that my door is always open. If you need to get a hold of me you can phone, drop by or email. As well, I have a page of resources and videos that are thought provoking. Education is rapidly changing, like the world around us, and it’s good to think about how this will impact our kids.
