Seachange Brass- 1/13/2019, Sunday @6pm

Seachange Brass performs at elementary schools throughout San Diego County that do not have music programs. The objective of these performances is to facilitate new band programs at these schools to fill the musical void. SeaChange Brass intends to introduce and replicate the highly successful after-school band program model that has been in place at the Solana Beach School District for 15 years. SeaChange Brass members have been directing and involved in the Solana Beach program since its inception. The members of Seachange Brass are among San Diego's top musicians and music educators and are wholeheartedly committed to music education and performing at the highest level.

"Seachange Brass performance programs encompass a broad range of musical styles, showcasing the full potential of the brass quintet. Our group is unique in that we collaborate with ten local brass musicians to assemble a full double brass quintet. While we generally perform as a group of five, having two people per instrument helps us ensure the quality and consistency of our work as an active performing and educating ensemble. All of our musicians are versed with the repertoire and education materials used in all of our programs to increase our group’s ability to be active seachangers in our community.”

The Concert: Join us for Seachange Brass' premiere performance! The brass quintet, whose members are among San Diego's top musicians, will perform a wide variety of music: everything from Bach to Bebop! By performing a broad spectrum of musical genres, Seachange Brass showcases the full potential of the brass quintet.

The Cause: SeaChange Brass members are passionate about the importance of instrumental music education in children's schools and, this concert is a sort of celebration. It was just 20 short years ago that Don McLean's infamous words from his 1970s hit song, "American Pie", came true in the San Dieguito area. Music had died in area schools; leaving over 25,000 students with absolutely no instrumental music education program.

Progress to Date: Luckily, thanks to a dedicated group of parents, teachers, students, and school administrators - things changed in the San Dieguito area. They rallied, worked together and grew quality music programs from the ground up. Thanks to these efforts, music education is thriving in the San Dieguito area today. It is estimated that over 50,000 students have taken instrumental classes over the last 20 years and every Junior High and High School in the San Dieguito area now offers quality instrumental music instruction within the curriculum of the schools.

The Challenge: School districts face difficult funding decisions and school music programs operate with limited funding. The musicians that comprise Seachange recognize these challenges and have formed Seachange to support school music programs throughout San Diego County. They donate their performance and workshop fees to help grow instrumental music programs within San Diego’s schools.

Support of the Cause: Consistent with the UUFSD Coastal Concert tradition, a portion of all ticket sales will help fund a local charitable cause. In this case, the donation will be made to school music programs in the San Dieguito area as well as to Seachange Brass in order to underwrite assemblies in San Diego County Schools that are unable to offer instrumental music education to their students.
