All CNHI production sites should have at least one working densitometer. It is the key to consistent print quality, because one operators "eye for density" will certainly be different than a co-workers. To keep advertisers happy, and editors proud of the print edition - make sure your press crew regularly uses a densitomer.
Cyan and Magenta should read 0.90 - dry solid ink density (SID)
Yellow is typically 0.85
Black should be 1.05.
Black ink densities above 1.10 will cause smudging, offsetting, and dark photos.
Note that the numbers above are for newspapers that have had a chance to dry for at least 30 minutes.
If you are grabbing newspapers directly off the press. Your targets should be about 0.03 higher than the numbers listed above. (For example: 0.93 for Cyan & Magenta)
