As we dive in, Adult Swim has undoubtedly released many projects in recent years that remained faithful to the anime genre. The network also houses their own original anime productions such as 'Uzumaki' and the upcoming 'Lazarus' set to release on Toonami in 2025!
But nothing has been inspired much by the genre and expressed through fighting from the animation juggernaut as Juston Gordon-Montgomery’s Invincible Fight Girl!
The DC Super Hero Girls director has stepped up to the ring to make his own new hero for everyone to see on their screens, and her name is Andy. (Sydney Mikayla)
The series starts with Andy, a teenager who resides in Accountant Isle with her parents, struggling to fit in the role that she was born to, being an accountant. Right away, it’s clear that she wants to do more than be an accountant — she wants to be a wrestler and has a heart of one but feel like she couldn’t express it. Throughout this story, she manages to try and beat the odds by showing others who doubted her that she is more capable than they thought. And, the way Andy goes through her battles by challenging people above her throughout the first four episodes is a very inspiring way for someone who may have feelings of self-doubt or believe they can’t commit to something they absolutely desire to achieve to show that, even with absolute low chances, that you should still try and keep fighting for that dream, no matter how much you struggle at it.
'Invincible Fight Girl' also excels with their very own talent — Sydney Mikayla’s voice delivery for Andy cannot go unnoticed. Her performance absolutely reflects her character’s personality, fire spirit and the goal to try to be on the top despite major obstacles in her way.
And the show also excels by being faithful to the anime and shonen themes that the show was influenced by. Good example are the moves that Andy is taught which helps her deal with foes that she challenges to the ring as she diversifies each one with her friends guiding her. No matter the opponent that she faces, she has her determination and her friends to guide her to success. The upcoming series also has a perfect comedy and action balance that definitely should be seen more.
The opponents that she faces from the episodes screened to us such as Immaculate (Tony Baker) and Mbrandon Beefpuncha (Luis Bermudez) demonstrate how the wrestling world is a huge challenge to Andy and how it isn’t easy to overpower them.
The wrestling, and how the story evolves overtime in less than five episodes is exactly how the show is a bear that shouldn’t be poked with. We believe Episodes 2 and 4 show perfectly of how it isn’t easy to be in the big leagues but that doesn’t mean you quit from there.
Andy’s journey to become a wrestler eventually leads to her finding new colleagues (Mikey and Craig) to join her along the way as her pure determination inspires them to follow similar paths.
Overall, Invincible Fight Girl has a lot of potential and is worth the hype it is being given! You’ll be able to see how her journey to the big ring progresses on Saturday, November 2nd on Adult Swim’s Toonami block at midnight! The show will also stream on Max with episodes debuting a day after its linear premiere.
