My name is Chris Maly, and I am honored to have the privilege of joining the English department at Triad High School for the 2017-2018 school year. I am a graduate of Collinsville High School and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I completed my student teaching assignment here at Triad High School, teaching both 9th grade English and 12th grade British Literature during the 2014-2015 school year. In the summer of 2015 I was hired at Staunton High School to teach 9th grade English through the 2015-2016 school year, then taught a variety of English courses at Carlinville High School for the 2016-2017 school year. When the opportunity for me to return to Triad presented itself, I was more than excited to return to what I consider to be my "home".
A little bit about me:
In my free time I enjoy cycling, working on cars, working with computers, reading, and writing. It seems like an odd combination of interests, but I enjoy a bit of variety. As far as literature is concerned (because what kind of English teacher would I be if I didn't elaborate on this?), I also have a wide interest, but place a special importance in American Literature. I believe that studying writings of this genre add to our understanding of the complex ethnic and socioeconomic history which explains the unique social climate that is indicative of the American experience. Some of my favorite authors (from this genre) include, but are definitely not limited to, Philip Roth, Toni Morrison, Frederick Douglass, Sandra Cisneros, Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, Jhumpa Lahiri, Arthur Miller, etc.
Above all of my personal interests is my role as a teacher - it provides me with a sense of identity. I believe one of the best ways to contribute to a community, and subsequently the larger society, is by making a career out of service. Because of this view, I take my profession very seriously and strive to improve myself everyday, aiming to pass on what I believe to be of utmost importance to my students.
If you are a student, I look forward to learning about you throughout the course of our school year. If you are a parent, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns; I will be happy to hear from you!
