Hello! I am Clyde Yicheng Wang 王亦诚, an assistant professor in Politics and East Asian Studies at Washington and Lee University. I am also a faculty affiliate at the East Asia Center of the University of Virginia.

My main research concerns propaganda and ideology in authoritarian political systems, with a special focus on contemporary China. In my dissertation, I explore the principles, organizations, and discursive strategies of China's propaganda system. Other topics I study include (a) the influence of propaganda and public discourse on foreign policy, (b) popular nationalism in China, and (c) Chinese intellectual history since the 1990s. My academic articles have been published in the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, the Journal of Contemporary China, Nations and Nationalism, and Political Communication.

I received my PhD in political science at Boston University. Before my PhD, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry (first class honor, minor degree in social sciences) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a master’s degree in China studies (with distinction) at the London School of Economics.

Apart from my scholarly works, I also write regularly as a columnist for Chinese language media outlets, especially the Initium (端传媒).
