Clinical Academic CEN for Speech & Language Therapists in the UK

Supporting SLTs to develop clinical academic careers

A clinical academic career is one in which the SLT works clinically in some form but also focuses on producing academic outputs, such as presentations, resources and publications. It is likely to include conducting research but for others it will be focused on teaching. There may be times when the SLT works solely in one setting, e.g. a University. However the difference between an academic career and a clinical academic career is that the SLT has the intention to remain clinically skilled. This is likely to involve part-time work in a clinical setting, an intention to return to full-time clinical work with a focus on research, or conducting research which is directly related to client benefit in some form. It also includes SLT clinicians who are planning or conducting research or research projects as part of their ongoing clinical practice.

The intention is to bridge the gap between clinical and academic settings.

The aims of the CEN are:

  • To provide mutual support, help and encouragement to all members.

  • To exchange ideas and information.

  • To discuss policy with regard to working in a clinical academic role, especially as this role is not well defined in SLT.

  • To create more interest in, and knowledge of SLT's role in clinical academic careers.

  • To improve multi-disciplinary communication and understanding of SLTs in clinical academic roles (e.g. through liaison and partnership with other AHPs and nurses/medics in clinical academic roles).

  • To raise awareness of clinical academic roles.

  • To liaise with RCSLT Advisers.
